Interesting. I comment as a single Japanese. Japanese culture has seniority as you said. but I don't think they didn't clap on purpose with strong will because of seniority and respect. If seniority and respect was a reason, that is unnatural for the Japanese way of thinking especially teenager. I think they couldn't clap because confused instead of on purpose. I think they just thinking "what should I do?" because of both seniority and Reina's awesome perform. They are just teenagers even if anime characters, not mature adults.

In Japanese culture, seniority is huge, things being equal, everyone would have clapped for the one with most seniority. The fact that they didn't is an indication that they didn't think Kaori deserved it, but out of respect, they also wouldn't clap for Reina. Also, Kumiko is not "in love" with Reina. She admires her and thinks of her as the ideal person she wants to be. Kumiko has gone throughout her whole life aimlessly following others without any aspirations of her own. Reina is the opposite, she is very passionate about playing and also her love for Taki sensei, and she wishes she could just not care the way she thinks Kumiko doesn't care about anything or anyone.
