2021-01-28 02:07:10 +0000 UTCTo clarify the math problem a little, the spheres are an approximation karma is using (the animators are using) to try and make the explanation easier to follow graphically. Basically, if you stack 8 of these cubes together while forming the lattice, the centers of those 8 cubes define another precisely equivalent cube. That's what the flipping around animation is supposed to show, that the centers of cubes in the original lattice behave as corners in the second lattice. Both lattices are exactly the same, except shifted in space. Therefore, by symmetry, the answer must be one half. However, the spheres are definitely an approximation. In reality, the points equidistant between a given vertex and the center define a flat plane, not a spherical surface. The blue cube with tons of angles and the pink polyhedra we see starting around 4:10 are correct, and thus it's completely reasonable to believe Asano would have arrived at the correct answer. It's a fun problem, both mathematically and thematically. Gotta love the over-the-top test questions!
