Kochikame is real and was the most beloved gag series in Japanese manga history (save maybe Doraemon) It ran for 40 years, without dropping a single week on Shonen Jump. Imagine a manga starting in 1976, years before Fist of the North Star, and then outlasting it, Dragon Ball, Jojo, Slam Dunk, Death Note and Bleach in the magazine. It held the Guinness record for most volumes of a manga at one point (twice that of One Piece). When it ended it was such a massive deal that all the manga running on Jump at the time snuck in parodies and references to the series that week (including this episode)
