I never saw him as an anti-villain, domas would fit more that role

I don't think it has anything to do with familiarity with the archetype, anyone who doesn't live under a rock should have been exposed to it plenty of times. Media is oversaturated with anti-heroes and anti-villains by writers who want a simple way to nuance a character.

The reason you were unable to understand and empathise with Apeas is because you're not familiar with the Anti-villain archetype.

Some of the viewers kept complaining about Apeas and Miranjo's ambivalent attitudes, but that was always the series' greatest strength. People have a lot of facets to them and emotions are never simple. Miranjo cared enough about Apeas to forgive, help and avenge him. She was also constantly sparing Hilling and Bojji whenever she can.
