I think they did say the stakes in the beginning? Didnt they say that if you win, your debt (the original debt... everyone on the boat owes debt they chose not to pay) is wiped clean and you are free and clear of that debt. If you lose, then you go to the mines or whatever sweatshopesque thing they have for a year where they work you like a dog. I think the new debt they take on the ship is separate, and another way to trap even the winners in a debt cycle... so even if they get off the ship and "win" to wipe out their debt, they may still owe a bunch more money they now have to still pay. So if you lose quickly, sure, you can just give the money back and you dont have new debt... however, you will be "sent to the mines" and get wrecked for a year. Edit: I think the mafia guy spoke about this at the beginning to the group. So this wouldnt be Funai's(?) lies to Kaiji. so it should be reliable. The Maf here seems like a casino... rigging stuff to make sure they always come out ahead, but being on the up and up and working within the rules they tell you.

this is my favourite anime, and im happy you're reacting to this! kaiji is such a unique mc, he's so naive and sympathetic but at the same time can be sharp as a nail. This combination of traits is rarely seen in anime and makes him more relatable to the audience.

So here's why Kaiji is the best gambling show ever -- It doesn't only show that gambling is fun and exciting, but also strongly engages people to its danger and viciousness. There will always be a few winners, but most of the time ordinary people will be losers once you get your weakness exposed to others. I just love Kaiji so much and always want to share it with everyone I know.

I was so excited to find out you guys are reacting to Kaiji. I'm curious if you guys will notice an Easter egg in the show - it has nothing to do with plot or characters so knowing it is 100% spoiler free, it's more a funny little quirk/joke of the show.
