The OVA's are quite important, they foreshadow so much they're practically canon. You'll even see things from the skits appear in the main seasons if you look out for them. Chris's Buddhist shrine makes an appearance in Season 5 for instance. On top of that they even give important development to some characters that might not get enough screen time in the main seasons.
