Lao still thought the fight (to the death) between Sing and Ash was going to happen. So even though we as the audience hate him, he was just doing what he thought he had to to save his little brother. Ash let himself slowly bleed out and die. He previously told god he would trade his life to keep Eiji safe and he just followed through

I have wanted you guys to watch and react to this anime ever since I started watching you and I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you guys finally watched it and loved it so much. It's an old manga and a new anime and its such a masterpiece and I'm so happy you guys reacted to it and that more people are getting to see this incredible show. <3

There's an epilogue for the Manga where it goes into more details and the aftermath of the ending of the series. I totally recommend reading it.

The worst thing about this is that Ash let himself die. It was not a fatal wound, had he gone to get help he would've still been alive but he preferred to go sit at his library spot and continue reading Eiji's letter as he slowly lost consciousness and finally felt peace. Also I heard that the mangaka decided to write this story after she lost her lover, she really said "if I'm going down, I'm not going alone" haha
