Where have you found the best subs? Also, do you have an example or two of bad translations in this? Thanks!

Ah, well, as I said, I've seen it in the comments from other reactions to 86, so I just assumed the people knew what they were talking about. My knowledge of Japanese is pretty much zero. Did a quick search just now and one of the uses does seem to cover "condolences". The example I found translated to "I'm sorry you got a divorce".

I'm not Japanese but living in Japan for more than 10 years. I think Ryuuji Gremory's interpretation is right.

Yes she never thought about asking them their real names, and that is a problem but the whole "she asked the cat's name before" always feels kind of forced to me. She asked the cats name because the cat became focus of the conversation and she didn't know a name for that cat.
It's not really equivalent but if you are online and get to know someone by their online/ingame nick, you have a conversation and for some reason it turns towards their pet, it's pretty normal that you might learn/ask the name of the pet long before ever thinking about asking the person their real name.

From my understanding gomen nasai or sumimasen wouldn't make that much sense in the situation either as that would be her apologizing for something she has done. On the other hand I have heard zannen as a way to express your condolence for someones loss before, and in a genuine way.
Maybe my Japanese simply isn't good enough and that is the correct interpretation that a Japanese person would give but to me it seem more like forcing Lena to seem worse than she is.

Probably for the better translations or whatever.

Mention something I read in the comments of other reactors to this show: the Japanese word Lena uses to apologize, "zanan" (or "zanen", sorry) isn't the same as "gomen nasai"/"sumimasen". It's what you use when you accidentally drop something or make some other slight mistake. That's one of the main factors for why Theo chose that moment to give Lena both barrels. She basically responded to the death with, "Oh, what a shame."

Though there is also the simple fact that she already had names to call them by.

Fun note: the name Shin give to the cat, "Remarque" refers to Erich Maria Remarque, the author of "All quiet in the western front" that is the book is reading. This is an anti belicist novel of his experiencies in WW1.

If you think about it, she asked for the cat’s name first before theirs, so that’s something to think about. But this is pretty much where everything will start getting interesting, so look forward to that. Not that it already wasn’t🤷♂️
The directing of the show is great too. That dual perspective really showcasing the difference between the characters; the last bit of the episode showing how disconnected Lena really is from the squad and the battlefield. No matter how ‘sorry’ she is, she’s not the one on the battlefield, even if her heart is in the right place.

There are so many tiny little details this show gives you. During the scene when Kurena storms out, you can see her reach up and turn off her Para-Raid device on her ear as sh does not want to listen to Lena talk to the team. As Daiya chases after her he too, turns his off, after he is done talking to Kurena, he turns his back off and that is when we jump back into the conservation with Lena. As Kurena re-enter the room, Shin pats the couch next to him inviting her to sit there. The cat then leaves his lap and goes over to Kurena. At one point the cat taps Kurena's ear while playing with her, it is at this point that Kurena finally reaches up and turns her para-raid back on. Tiny details.
