Caleb I think your earlier theory about Ubel's magic has some ground. She doesn't know all the complicated spells that went into making her proctor's cloak impenetrable. I think that, along with the memory/emotional significance of hearing fabric being snipped, contributes to her abilities.

Caleb will react positively to something, to which Jacob will steer the conversation in a more negative direction while pulling from preconceived notions or unfounded theories.
