The spinoff does have some plot relevant things and introduces a few characters that become relevant later, but the anime decided, for whatever reason, to cut out most of the jokes from the novel in favour of those relevant things so watching it is a bit of a slog. You guys will be able to fill in the gaps no problem without suffering through that.
