There is heavy implication in the gaps that the brothel owner is Maomao's actual grandmother - which is why MM could be born in the first place and why she was never sold to the man who's inability to put 2+2 together caused her daughter so much suffering. I also think MM's mom took on customers as a form of accountability to the other courtesans for decreasing their value by association and to spare them from having to do so while the house rebuilt it's brand.
