Our version of it would maybe be something like showing someone your ankles. And of course Fern and Stark think it is incredibly daring. Both of them were raised by the old men that were Frierens team mates, meaning they were raised on their standards for that sort of thing. But to Stein it is like if someone tried to seduce him by dropping their handkerchief in front of him.
