I highly recommend watching the sequel that came out a few years ago. Doctor Sleep, based on another Stephen King book. It will answer a lot of your questions and is a damn good movie, although the plot is a little far fetched.

2022-10-09 03:29:02 +0000 UTCHow to explain since I didn’t see anyone else say though this a long-back reaction to be posting to: A lot of things are odd or don’t make full sense because Kubrick butchered the story. The book is terrifying, IMO, and VERY different in significant ways that affect the entire development and explanation of the storyline and characters and the story occurrences themselves. And trust, this is zero percent generic “the book was better”… films always have to make adjustments to an extent. Kubrick made a great suspenseful film that is a classic… and has plot holes, confusions, and large epic loss of nuance where it’s not an adjustment and reduction of book details to make it fit a movie's time allowances. He just flat gutted the story and made a different film with the same name and basic plot that could've been done without the King book tied to it and character name changes, really. You won’t get stuff clarified because Kubrick didn’t bother on a lot of it, really, even for his own version. He managed to both make a great classic and a bad movie at the same time.
