2021-10-08 22:01:03 +0000 UTCHi guys! I love this movie, it's deliberately old school in the way it goes about building scares. This is a "true" story in some respects - Ed and Lorraine Warren really existed, as did the Peron family who were allegedly haunted in their Rhode Island farmhouse. In fact Lorraine Warren was still alive when this film was being made, and had a cameo as an audience member at the Warren's college lecture. Where the movie exaggerates is the level of involvement of the Warren's in the Peron's case, and especially about the amount of evidence gathered. It's important to remember that no one has ever - EVER - found unequivocal evidence of anything supernatural, in spite of 150 years of organised scientific research. (By the way, the Annabelle doll is real, but it's actually a Raggedy Ann doll. I guess it's just not as scary in a movie.) The Peron mother and kids were very obviously fantasy prone individuals all their lives. The Warren's were rabidly pro paranormal quasi Catholics. Their first and only explanation for any reported phenomena was "demons," even if other explanations seemed much more likely. On multiple cases they were involved with, people who interacted with them report that they were not so much interested in discovering the facts of the case, than exploiting the reports for profit. Again, I love "The Conjuring " movies but keep in mind that they paint the Warren's as much more sane and honest than they really were.
