2022-03-24 02:02:37 +0000 UTCHonestly, when just hearing the plot like that it sounds so insane you'd assume there's no way it would work and here it is being an incredible film; I did not in anyway think this movie was going to go into a sci fi route but surprisingly it's presented so naturally that it feels normal and it isn't rushed or weird in the story.

Basically I gushed about how much I love this movie, and then imagined the pitch meeting at the studio: " This is a character study about obsession within 19th Century stage magicians. As the story progresses, they slowly escalate their desire to outdo each others performance through doing each other harm repeatedly, past the point of wanting to kill each other to finally desiring to uttterly destroy their rival. There is a sci fi element in that Nikola Tesla assists one of the magicians, giving him the power to duplicate himself. That magician goes on to murder untold numbers of copies of himself in the hope of eventually framing his rival for his death. His plan succeeds but he is brought down at the end because of his failure to realise that his rival was secretly identical twins. Tesla has to be played by David Bowie." I'm amazed that this film was made with so many talented people involved!
