You gotta watch the movie "The Zodiac". Dirty Harry drew from the real Zodiac case. My dad was a MP at Presidio during the Zodiac killings, He'd talk a little about it if asked. There was a lot of speculation that the Zodiac was in the Army stationed there due to his cyphers and codes etc. But, the movie really well done, great cast.

I would suggest, if you're going to follow up with it, watch "Magnum Force" (1973), "The Enforcer" (1976), skip "Sudden Impact" (1983), and then return to "The Dead Pool" (1988). The reason I suggest skipping "Sudden Impact" is that it veers completely away from usual Harry Callahan story into a project that I can only assume was a project for Eastwood's then-significant other, Sondra Locke. "The Dead Pool" returns the franchise to its form as a Harry Callahan-centered story. Although "Dead Pool" has one of the most ridiculous "car chases" ever put on screen.
