I would live and die if you guys watched Generation Kill. It's a short, 7 episode mini series on HBO about some Marines in Iraq around 2004 or so. It's based on a book written by a Rollling Stone reporter, Evan Wright who sadly took his own life at the end of last year, who embedded with this Marine unit as they invaded Iraq. Its amazing, its honest, its accurate and its brutal. Can't recommend it enough.

My husband at the time was career military, and when they showed on the TV news the Somalis dragging the US soldiers through the streets, he lost his f**king mind. I don't know who okayed that footage for the evening news, but the outrage over the incident was pretty wide spread. After that, the US was understandably reluctant to intervene in African conflicts. It was referred to as Somalia Syndrome. Not long after this was the genocide in Rwanda and the US mainly focused on humanitarian aid. The US not intervening has been criticized and seen as contributing to the genocide's high death toll, which was nearly a million in just 100 days. 😕
