During the tenth century, King Haakon the Good began the Christianisation of pagan Norway.
To ease the transition, Haakon was persuaded that the celebration of Yule be moved to coincide with Christmas, and famously refused to partake in the heathen Yule feasting and drinking of beer, so determined was he not to damn his soul to hell.
However, in merging Yule with Christmas, he had ultimately only ensured the preservation and subsequent global spread of heathen rituals of drunken, consumptive, gift-giving merriment for the next millennium.
The soul of Haakon Jarl is one of the Madame's favourite possessions.
