I’ve found myself having to suddenly rearrange some things in my life! Well, not too sudden, since we’d been planning on this happening for half a year now; I’ve gotten a new roomie! Not only that, around the same time(which was unexpected) my day job has graciously changed my schedule for me to work 4 days a week, 10 hours a day!
Learning to adapt our interests and pursuits around school or work has been something we’ve all ended up doing throughout our lives. We have something, usually, in our day-to-day that’s nonnegotiable. When we were kids it was school, later on it can become college, internships, and where I’m at now, it’s my day job.
I’m very lucky my job has a very routine and organized schedule - when it changes, it’s rare and only happens maybe twice a year. I get to comfortably plan most things around the block of time. With my current change, I went from working 5 shifts from 1:45pm to 11:45pm to 4 shifts a week from 10:30am to 9:30pm! Previously I had Wednesdays off, and now I have Sun/Mon/Tue off!
So here’s where blocking comes in- before, I’d wake up, do chores or shower in the first hour, and then I’d have about 2-2.5 hours to work on art, be it Patreon stuff, commissions, or personal work. Then I’d go to work for 9 hours. And then I’d come home at about 11pm, then continue working on art for another 2ish hours, then fall asleep.
When it comes to blocking out time for an activity, I’d say 30 minute chunks are your best bet if possible. Account for how long it’d take for you to get ready for it, travel, or even shift your mental gears to get in the mindset for it.
With my new schedule, I can’t really get nearly as much art done(if I want to sleep a healthy amount that is) I still get up and do whatever chores/shower in the first hour, but then it’s off to work! When I get home, though, that’s when I’d get to put in a few hours into my creative pursuits! Today was the first day of my new shift, in fact. I raced against the clock to get this one posted, haha.
The boon here though is that I’ll have an extra day off. It probably may end up being not terribly productive either- but that way I can try n maximize the other 2 days with my fellow artist roomie to get our art stuff done(and not feel burnt out by my day job)! I do look forward to the day where doing this is my main focus! But until then I gotta make the most of the time I do have.
Heck, March is just a few days away! I'll be planning out what it'll look like, and review how February went! Thanks so much again for pledging to me, and joining me on my journey!
