Thanks to folks here and on Twitter and in private conversation, I decided to take action on a particular story idea I had many years ago- a decade, in fact. I took a week off of work to make the time to do this, and these are the results of that week! But for context, if you're just joining my art journey journaling, I'd recommend reading the NukiNews posts from earlier this month!

So following the last two weeks’ posts, and with a plan of action, I’ve taken to creating first passes of these 4 characters of mine. Without further ado, here they are- their design, the rough gesture drawings for them. I do apologize for how patreon might format these images- but hopefully you can see them well enough!
Machi the Ferret Knight

Victoria the Fox Gladiator

Sal the Wooly Shepherd

Daquavius the Tiger Dancer

I had the most interesting experience while making these. When I’d gotten to drawing the sketches for each of the characters, I’d find myself actually crying. Moved to tears. It’s a bit silly, actually typing it out, but, it felt like something I should have done long ago, like a weight off my shoulders I didn’t realize I had. I’m not filled with regret or anything of the sort for not drawing them until now, but it was very cathartic to have finally done so. Most story ideas and characters I have tend to drift off or be recycled, but these never really did! It’s not even like I know them deeply, in fact for Sal, I didn’t determine what animal they’d be until I put pen to tablet!
Yet, there’s some kind of strong sentimentality for them that I have. Perhaps they’re like a connection to my adolescent self. But I spose that’s going a bit deep on it! I didn’t get to do anything fancy with these. I initially did want to paint them, maybe I might in the future. I don’t think these are perfect representations of the characters by any means, but I’m really happy I took the time to make them!
I’d say if you have characters or an idea that you’d been hanging onto for years, it’s a good idea to get them down in some way, be it drawings, or writing, music, anything! For what comes next, I have a few more characters I might get around to making next month! But I think I would like to do some proper paintings of these four firstly. My day job has decided June will be another month of crunch time so we'll see how that goes!
