We live in a great time. Troubled, but a great one. Back in 2012, I remember saying to my mom “Boredom has been cured!” Because with the internet, there’s nothing out of reach for you to learn about and take interest in.
Doesn’t mean you’ll NEVER get bored, of course. But I’m sure people are less bored compared to before the internet really exploded(I know I definitely am). A lot of it has to do with YouTube being such a huge platform now, with so many people of a variety of niches within niches making stuff for people to watch and take interest in and learn about.
Me for example, I’ve recently taken to watching a channel that has been playing Pokemon games in weird and unusual ways. Such as having an actual World Champion in official Pokemon Tournaments controlling the opponent trainer AI to stop the player from winning.
Into ASMR? Well I’ve recently found a channel that is a roleplay of this person’s cat who is some sort of feline model getting various silly treatments and procedures.
Granted, this extends to the fur community too- lots of interests have emerged, some new, some recontextualizing old interests, and others that started as something very niche has broadened in appeal! Merging and fusions is one example of this, too- back in 2014-2016, my merging art and others making the stuff had been vocally regarded as ‘weird, strange, repulsive, grotesque’. I’d get comments of people feeling the need to tell me how weird ti was, and the stuff didn’t get too much traction either, understandably.
But now, I’m known for my merging work, in 2020 I decided to push for more merging work, and after a few years of not doing much of it, the new audience it reached was way more receptive to it too. I was and still am flabbergasted! I’m very glad about it though don’t get me wrong. I pretty much credit Steven Universe for this broadening acceptance or fusions n merging; the show got really popular and featured these concepts pretty prominently. My friends link me to tweets now of other furs openly stating “man I wanna merge/fuse with my friends”- they get it, they understand the appeal I do of the concept.
Before I get too carried away though, I bring this up because boredom, while easy to dispense of these days, still very much has its place and is important. When you feel bored for long enough, you’ll instinctively *do* something about it. So if you ever feel lost in what you want to do- get bored. Turn off all your devices and sit there. Your mind will conjure up things you’d rather be doing instead of just sitting around! And time away can allow your mind to connect thoughts and previous ideas into something new you’d like to try.
So, an example of that, I could draw a Pokemon who is getting Beedrill-sting therapy after beating the World Champion. Which...should explain this NukiNews art for you. :P
Anyway, stay bored, find something interesting, and create! Thanks for reading! Next week I’ll be going over the 2nd quarter of my progress this year. :)
