[OUTDATED] How to export characters - Textools to Blender

Edit: This video is outdated now! I released a new version with this step by step over here. Thank you!!!

Hello! Today's video is how I'm putting together characters from Textools to Blender after the graphical update.

If you already have experience getting the models from before, then there might be nothing really new in this video, since the basics are pretty much the same. I still hope this can be helpful to beginners anyway! I go over how to get the pieces from the characters you want, how to export them, and how I tweak them to make them look better in Blender.

I'm no expert in the shader part, and I'm still trying to figure things out after the update, so things still might change in the future. For now, I'm just showing the very basics of what I know.

Here is where you can get Textools.
And the link for the mentioned Mektools!
And here are my custom texture maps for the Limbal Rings. Feel free to use it for yourself as well:

This is the one you connect to the Emission Color in the Eye shader.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback! I'll do my best to help out.

Thank you very much for watching and for your support :)

Edit: Hi! I recently found out how to get the dye colors directly on textools without having to edit them later! So it's not in the video, but here what you have to do:

Select this option:

It will open the material menu. Look for the "View/Edit Colorset" button.

To your right, there's a dropdown menu where you can pick the dye you want.

After you pick the dye you want, Click on "Dye All Rows" and select the Dye Channel. If it's an updated gear with two, you can choose exactly which one you want, otherwise, just "Dye All" or the first one works. Then, "Save to FFXIV".

Textools make it so you have to be on "Unsafe mode" to pick this option, because it will alter the game files directly, so be aware of that.

When you go back to the model preview, it will be the color you chose:

Now you can add it to the FMV, or just export the piece speratadly in FBX, that the texture file will be the right color:

I hope this helps! Sorry for not including it in the video, I'm still figuring out stuff. If you have any other questions please let me know and I will do my best to figure it out!

Thank you for keeping me updated!! Sorry for taking too long to answer this time, I didn't get the notif of your reply :') anyway I'm glad it was a simple problem to solve, and it's good to know that could happen!! I also don't play the game in the PC I use to make these videos, so I always have to remind myself of updating it here. The good thing about using a different pc to play and to get the assets from is that you can mess with the files, dyes and mods without any concerns about breaking the game for playing! :P

Just wanted to update you on this issue, this was indeed the problem. Kind of dumb on my part that I didnt try this before asking for help. I thought I had FFXIV fully updated, I hadnt logged in on my pc version since before the Dawntrail update. Once i did, i have full access to dying the armor in textools. It may be a dumb problem that most people wont have an issue for, but I thought id update you anyways if someone else were to ask about this issue. Thanks again for the amazing tutorials and the quick response!

Thank you so much for the quick response! I was thinking about it and I did check to make sure the game was fully updated, but the thing is I don’t play the game on my pc, I play it on ps5 so my pc version doesn’t contain my account that has Dawntrail, so maybe the issue lies there, once I get time today I will try and log in to my account on the pc version to get it up to date and then reinstall textools to see if the issue gets solved. (Note: I was trying to adjust the fuga top, but then realized it happened with every armor piece)

I'm glad it's helpful!! Hmm I've never got this error before, I'm trying to see if I get to replicate it right now...which armor piece are you trying to dye specifically? Or does it happen to everything? Is your game client updated for Dawntrail as well? From what I know, the stainingtemplate_gud refers to the file required to change the dye channel, and "gud" is graphical update. I'll keep testing it and I'll try to come back with an answer if I figure out anything!

First off this is such a fantastic tutorial! I did have a question, idk if the answer is apearant or not, but when i try and go to color set change to dye armor pieces, i get an error saying "unable to load material into color set editor. Error: file does not currently exist: chara/base_material/stainingtamplate_gud.stm". is this a known issue? ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling and same error occurs.

There is!! I actually found out yesterday, so it's not in the video, sorry about that. I'll update the post with screenshots and instructions to make it easier! Click on the eye icon next to the "materials" menu, it will open a bunch of options. Right on top, there's one "View/Edit Colorsets". You have a dropdown menu of "Preview Dyes" to the right with all of the dyes. You can select one, and then click "Save to FFXV". When you go back to the Model preview, it will be dyed :) then when you export the model, it will export it with the dye you chose.

Liz Ard

Is there a way to apply dyes to gear with Textools?
