The Horrors of Plum Island | Hybrids, Human Experiments and Weaponized Killer Insects

In July 2008, the carcass of an animal washed up on the beach at Montauk Point Long Island. Local beachcombers are used to seeing dead animals. Seagulls, fish, crabs, even the occasional whale. But they had never seen anything like this.

Animal experts were brought in to identify it. They were stumped. It looked like part dog, part reptile and part rodent - with the beak of a bird. This animal, whatever it was, became known as the Montauk Monster.

But where did the Monster come from?

There could be only one answer. Plum Island.

Plum Island is just a few miles from where the monster was found.

Locals had heard rumors that this was a top-secret government facility that created bioweapons, engineered animal hybrids and maybe even experimented on people.

Sounds like a wild theory.

But then another animal washed up on the beach. Again, it couldn't be identified. And then another animal. And then two more.

In 2010, the *rumors* about Plum Island seemed to be true when something else was found on the beach. This time it wasn't a strange animal. It was a body. A human body.

Well... it was almost human.

Scary, scary

David Leatherman

I joined patron just for Heckle fish.

George Quihuis

We'll never really know but, that's the beautiful thing about it all. Just live and don't worry about what you can't control. Question it, but don't worry it.

Steven Moore

He’s a pretty smart guy!

Wilma Titzgreaux

the one thing about this episode that really bugged me is how they hell did AJ know rats have four toes on their back feet, how the hell would you know that?

Bosco Lemonzit

Most weeks they do post early here on Patreon on Thursday or Wednesday but sometimes with editing they can’t do it and you get it when the show starts at 6 PM Pacific time on YouTube

Bosco Lemonzit

Hey everyone….. i’m not sure the schedule any more (now that it’s changed). Does anybody know when the next video will be up and will it be here on Patreon or will it be on YouTube (where I usually watch it)? Thank you so much.❤️

Wilma Titzgreaux

That was actually kind of odd. I unplugged my computer ethernet cable and I put my phone in airplane mode, but I forgot about my old XR, which does not have phone service at all, but was still connected to the Wi-Fi and it got the alert. they said they were going to do it to cell phones, TVs and radio but apparently it was coming through the Internet Interesting. So I took my phone out of airplane mode at 1:28pm central and about 10 seconds later the alert sounded on it. Gonna give computer 30 min and rehook it up and see what happens

Bosco Lemonzit

Put in airplane mode.

MikeD

Great episode!! I agree this may be among the best! Fine work, AJ and crew!!

David Parisi

I’m turning off everything….phones, tvs, iPads, etc.

Wilma Titzgreaux

Which reminds me, in the show with all the ticks, I half expected AJ to do a quasi X-Files thing and the cockroach episode and at some point towards the end of the show have a tick walk across the screen. Do you even think of doing that and decide not to?

Bosco Lemonzit

Totally off-topic, but did anybody catch the article about the test on Wednesday 220pmEastern, they’re going to send an emergency broadcast to every cell phone radio and TV and oh my, the conspiracy theories are what this is all about everything from activating spike proteins to zombie apocalypse - still might turn my phone off though

Bosco Lemonzit

It keeps disappearing and coming back again on my YouTube. Might just be mine mate

Olly Williams

What makes you think it’s hidden? Not disagreeing, just wondering as the episode has 1.4 million views as of Monday morning and it doesn’t have the dreaded Wikipedia context warning. Ads also still running.

MikeD

Splice?

MikeD

Great show, as usual. But something is driving me crazy. What movie is the creature from that you use in your thumbnail? I know I've seen it.

Davey_D

Fantastic episode. I've been saying for decades the US is a huge petri dish. 😖

Mikki Proffitt

This is one of my favourite episodes so far!

John Lane

Why has this been hidden on youtube

Olly Williams

This may very well be one of the best episodes you've done.

Shanon Freeman

Yeah, just like they promised us the genetically modified salmon in salmon farms wouldn’t escape into the wild. Oh wait, they did in Iceland.

Bosco Lemonzit

Snakes and gators - just in case you change your mind and want another excuse to stay away from Florida or the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana

Bosco Lemonzit

Awesome show. I think this was one of your best shows. Really made me think and wonder......why!!

Don Stewart

Wow this episode really freaked me out I live in NJ about 45 miles away from NYC. I thought they would have to be much more careful like the world depended on it. I don't think we should be messing with diseases or viruses unless they are trying to come up with cures

Steven Chell

Thanks A.J. I've got the 🍿😘

Elise

I'm asking myself where have I been since only hearing about the first "animal" washing up and then disappearing?!?!?

Elise

I love this episode. I always wondered about those "things" washing up on the shoreline. I am not thrilled that the new facility will be in Kansas...

Tiph Tobie

Oh my gosh!!! Favorite episode!!! 💙

Sandra Childress

Dr Aafia Sidiqi also visited Vancouver and had access to reservoirs in southern BC. But she would have needed help and night vision goggles and knowledge of the water testing schedule.

MysTerri

Thanks for the great story. Double thanks for the Tshirt!

John Seychel

as always a great episode guys, well done!! and terrifying to know this thing about the killer bugs exist, stay safe everyone

azreen

I am waiting for the dangler and slippers to go live!!!!

DawnAW

Awww….you guys are the best! I sent 2 pictures of her with her favorite new toy (Hecklefish plushie). I hope you guys do an episode on NDE’s (especially if animals greet us) soon! Much love to the team!

Wilma Titzgreaux

Thank you so much 🙏

Wilma Titzgreaux

Thank you! She was absolutely the sweetest cat….not a mean bone in her body! I think Hecklefish would’ve even liked her!

Wilma Titzgreaux

Big YES on the Hecklefish dangler and slippers - wallet ready - ka-ching!

MyAurora

Dangler dangler boil a Spangler. Ate some hecklefish and am now in danger

Jim Sharrow

Dangler dangler boil a Spangler

Jim Sharrow

Terrifying episode! Be careful, guys.

Benjamin Doyle

Wow, Incredible episode! Not too worried about deadly bugs since I already live in the Amazon. (Haha, but seriously, I do) Well done as always WF team, I tip my hat to you.

Autumn Spredemann

Great podcast!

Linda Donico

Fascinating and disturbing, just how I love them! Great research on this. I had no idea just how flagrantly the government handles security. Thanks for another amazing episode!!

Katy

Terrifying

peter drysdale

Save me, jebus. That video depressed me to all heck. Also I have a new list of US states I never want to visit. Not that I needed an excuse to not be within 1000km of Florida anyway.

Ivari Tölp

Is the music thing new?

HattieAnne

This was INTENSE! I was a bit stressed during this episode... and I drove by that CDC building earlier today lol

Oliver Moreno

Excellent episode! Thanks again for the excellent research and presentation. Just a few hints if you're interested in more of this: Ecohealth Alliance, Peter Daszak, CIA.

Andy Shriver

Bummer...I live in Kansas!

Eric E Erickson

"The Hot Zone" mini-series, based on book of same name, is story of how Ebola escaped CDC/Ft Detrick. In 2019 all research at Ft Detrick's lab (USAMRIID) was indefinitely put on hold after the CDC cited the org for failing to meet biosafety standards.

AnonLurkerVids

I live on LONG ISLAND! I’m not going to sleep tonight!!!!!!!! 😱 Glad they are closing it down!

Kathleen Dorney

Wow ! A chilling, sobering episode. Yet you guys still manage to make it fun. Wonderful research as well, as always. Cheers !

thormusique

Omgosh

linda baker

Yes, I did forget it, but now I remember that terrible noise.. thank you

John Edgeworth

An exceptional episode, the truth when found is way scarier than fiction. Crabcats may be mean … but ticks are bad, real bad.

william john travis morgan

Super wow!

Deirdre a greene

Another one of those I wish I could have ended it on a happy note episodes lol

Ryan Downing

This is one of the best episodes you and Hecklefish have put out! LOVED IT!!!

Wendaruth

My God. This is terrifying. You think the government would be more responsible... oh wait... Another great and informational episode Why Files Team!

Joe P

That was the most terrifying 30 minutes of my life

Ryan Gallant

"As recent as the 1990s..." That needs amended to as latest as 2020 lol

Ryan Downing

You forgot the worst of the 70s - disco music

Bosco Lemonzit

Hands down one of your best!!!!!

No Way Jose

This was chilling and a great episode. Well done, Why Files Team

Jen Giresi

Why do we still allow the US government to run. We need to rise up and stop them.

Jason Moore

I think I'm done with patreon. Been nothing but a hassle.

Rebecca Maybelline Queen

Idk why it won't play for me

Rebecca Maybelline Queen

Wow. No, Kris L had it right. "Holy fuck!"

NanTiki

I am never leaving my house again!

Melissa Taylor

Holy fuck...

Kris L

Very imprtant topic 😳😱

Tegan

First I’m sorry for your loss. I did lose a couple coworkers that I miss. But don’t take it out on AJ unless you’re suggesting there’s a conspiracy around Covid?

Bosco Lemonzit

This was a great episode!

Adventures with Krit

Can you say CoFED!

Safe and effective!

I'm ready to climb inside Mel's Hole, just let me get my HazMat suit on and grab some snacks...

Brenda H

NICE! No RPG Game again tonight... so I will wait for the premiere to watch

BrashFink

Great episode. Very scary though..

Mitchell Reid

Great show, I lived in New Haven, Ct during the 60, and 70's, Ahh fun years; Vietnam protects, (Black Panther) Bobby Seal trial, the Moon, Landings, Nixon resigns, Ford falls down a lot (not as much as Biden). lots of great music, and "other" stuff to take ah do, and yes as you mentioned, Lyme disease. Psst lets not forget the Iran hostage crisis of 1979ish among other things!

John Edgeworth

I laughed too hard at this.

SemperBarta

Great episode!! An Eye opener for sure. And as Always thank you for making it so fun to watch 🥰

Eliana Brown

Very nice research. I wonder when he'll be shut down because of the issue he raises.

Frank baker

This is a good one AJ and team. Fascinating...but frightening.

SemperBarta

My Time on the Island was not fun, but it made me "what" I am today, so I guess I'm ok with it.

Kevin Via

In case you got amnesia and forgot?😂

Laura Lamantia

I'm convinced of quantum immortality. There's no way we survived all those accidents 😂

Laura Lamantia

Oooo... it started off as a neat mutated monster type story and ended up being really scary. Good job, WF Crew.

Joe Little

Good luck in tornado season - I’m sure they designed things to withstand them. Couldn’t possibly see the tornadoes suck up and spread everything in the place over the next three states.

Bosco Lemonzit

Try not to breathe or drink the water...

Brenda H

I knew safety protocols were lax, but Damn!! This was an excellent episode, Thank you, WF Team 💞

Bobbie Zarate

Three things I hate the most in this world: 1. Ticks 2. Shadow People 3. Angel Food Cake If WF does an angel food cake episode, it will have forced me to face all my fears in-depth and head-on. 😳🤣🤣🤣

NorthwoodsJen

I live in Manhattan, KS.... oh joy!

Michele Hoffman

Greetings from Manhattan, KS!!! Future home of the NBAF labs.... otherwise known as Plum Island 2.0!! Great.... 🙄

Michele Hoffman

I can't speak for the US, but working on some labs in the U.K. , the security around the design for these facilities is quite stringent. However theoretically speaking........ what a design consultant puts on a drawing and what is actually built may be different especially if the client is looking to cut costs.

Hitesh

Wow, this one super freaked me out. Great episode. Thank you guys!!

Liz Jacoby

I agree very strange episode

Steve Gold

It's about 2 hours away by car.

Tamarah Hood

Thanks to you and your team to have the guts to get this produced. I look forward to spreading it far and wide when it hits YouTube. Having had Lyme disease in the 70's, I can only wonder what else I've encountered through the years...Now is the time to keep exposing the dirty incompetents...

Rick Flynn

Very scary

GIFT REVOLVER

This has to be the most disturbing video you’ve produced yet

Joedemo

What a great, but scary episode !!!

Jeff Pierce

This is what you call fascinatiing

Thanatos

hahaha ...random question ;-) Gino is here.

The Why Files

Son of a bich man, if I wasn’t already militant enough toward agencies like NASA that are dirty lying crooked puke bags, this one makes me wish a few teams of “retired” navy seals and other special ops teams would make a country/world wide tour to clean up this garbage. The CIA 100% needs to be abolished.

John Hobart

thanks for this!!! ;-)

The Why Files

oh no!! So sorry to hear this news! Many hugs and much love- please send us the pic: https://thewhyfiles.com/wild/

The Why Files

Great episode!

Amanda Russell

Chuckle

Bosco Lemonzit

Outstanding episode, way to go AJ and team!

SnowCrash

With holes drilled in his head — I’m curious if they were measured out and done methodically. Crazy story.

Donovan Young

Completely agree. Before DDT was banned, Malaria was almost eliminated. Now it kills more people every year than anything else. But it kills poor, African people. Maybe that's the point?

The Why Files

Wow!!! I'm sad and angry and yes, totally freaked out. So glad you have the stones to talk about this, Thank you

Jeff Wallace

I’ve always been disgusted with the way the western world treats Africa as a petri dish for medical experiments

Bosco Lemonzit

Completely agree. Before DDT was banned, Malaria was almost eliminated. Now it kills more people every year than anything else. But it kills poor, African people. Maybe that's the point?

The Why Files

The story disappeared. And it's a weird one. He was fully clothed in a nice summer outfit. But he washed up in the middle of a New York winter and hadn't been dead that long. Fell off a boat? I don't know.

The Why Files

Thanks, Kaz. I don't know if politicians would enjoy our show!

The Why Files

anyone remember the song Bring Back Leroy Brown by Queen? I have for years been singing 'bring back, bring back, bring back back DDT'. we really need to say sorry to the eagles and condors for a couple of years and spray and fog the entire country with DDT again to kill all these nasty bugs, besides, condors and eagles die at a high rate today from flying into windmills and nobody says squat about that. so yea, lets bring back DDT and wipe out west nile, Lyme malaria, and whatever else they carry.

Bosco Lemonzit

Excellent feature. I don’t know if I’m crazy — was it ever covered — what was up with the human washing up on shore in this?

Donovan Young

Was the first newspaper with the Nazi scientists from Marvel?

Woods Custom Guns

Could be a good story. We could talk about Hart Island, too.

The Why Files

This made me itchy, too!

The Why Files

The Montauk Monster was most likely a raccoon.

The Why Files

This was a Wow episode. I knew some of this, but you brought so much more to light for me. I hope thousands watch this! I hope some of our congresspeople watch it too. Great job, AJ and team.

Kazren

I hope you're having a better week, Paul!

The Why Files

It opened in Manhattan, KS in June. 😕

The Why Files

It is - and the video and coffee in my Sheeple mug helped ;)

CJ Jones

I hope your week is doing better, CJ!

The Why Files

Yep. Is that close to you?? Yikes.

The Why Files

I was itchy editing this one. Seriously. I do not do well with bugs.

The Why Files

Thanks Luke. Now let's get back inside Mel's Hole.

The Why Files

I wonder when their last leak was.

The Why Files

Holy mackerel, that was a great, yet disturbing episode. 😳 And now I feel really itchy for some reason. 😆

Nikki G_0

So, what were the strange creatures that washed up?

Brad Moran

Terrifying

The Why Files

Manhattan. It's already there: https://www.usda.gov/nbaf

The Why Files

City Island in the Bronx New York was where I used to keep and sail my S2 boat and also where I first learned to sail at New York Sailing Center. The Island has a storied history with Americas Cup races that went on for over a hundred years. The first was “Magic” a 12 meter sailing cup winner and defender. The last was Freedom I believe and in the early nineteen eighties when City Island no longer had any affiliation with the Cup races the U.S. lost the cup and it would seem the Magic ended to. Anyway, while playing in the waters of that lovely place I learned of the lobsterman’s wars over grounds for harvesting the crustaceans , a lucrative business. In those years a strange thing started to happen to lobsters in the waters surrounding Plum Island and the evidence soon spread all over the Long Island Sound, lobsters were developing terrible shell cancers and many were just put back in the water never to be harvested. This hit the lobsterman pretty hard and had an adverse effect on the industry. Very little attention seemed to be paid by media but everyone on City Island knew the circumstances. I’ve no idea what ever became of the blight as I no longer sail there but for a while “Sammys Fish box”, a local Restaurant was watched by all for signs of the problem. Actually everyone knew a lobsterman or someone who did for the real news of the harvesting. Was the problem an escaped disease or pathogen created or worked on in Plum Island military weapons labs we may never know. . Love your channel AJ so keep up the nice what ever it is your doing as long as you can please. Hey, maybe Hekelfish can do a deep dive on the Island for the first hand fish stories or lobster tails. Lol Happy Days all

Mark william lane

I love the Why Files. It makes me happy. No matter how bad the week's been, saving TWF for Friday night and watching it with my GF makes it all fine!

Paul Jordan

I don’t have an issue with it. I’m watching on my IPhone’s browser. What are yo watching from?

Tim Harris

Wow, to imagine this facility is practically moving to the center of the mainland U.S. is scary.

Family BambooClub

Life has been a bear this week and then I look at my email and see this post! the week just got better!

CJ Jones

Well, damn. It opened In June of this year in Manhattan, KS. Level 4 biolab. How freaking nuts.

Tamarah Hood

The government is a reflection of the people in it

Tamarah Hood

Where in Kansas? That's where I live

Tamarah Hood

There are things he can't talk about. He has mentioned it many times. He has also mentioned Covid is one of those things right now. Do you even watch bro?

CF

well, between living surrounded on two sides by a corn field (anyone remember Harvest Home) and one side a cemetery, now watched this before bedtime and man the nightmares have been great! my whole skin tingled all night long with imagined bugs crawling all over me

Bosco Lemonzit

Not scared to speak the truth. Try it sometimes

Einstein

Another brutal episode. Chefs kiss.

Luke the Duke

lmao, TRIGGERED!!

Jason I S

Now this is the only episode to personally scare me! Here in San Antonio we have a disease research facility just miles away from my house!!!

Jason I S

My God. Just watching was worrying and upsetting. I can't begin to imagine what researching it all was like. What the hell has mankind done?

Mik Smith

Thanks AJ.

Jessica Gearhart

I swear, life is like 12 Monkeys now.

Ognito

And Porton Down.

Susi Su

These are terrible - but non of them have had the devastation they had on life, death and economy as covid 19. And you brushed that off. Are you scared of or compromised by the Chinese? Or are you one of those who dislikes USA so much that you think calling others bad distracts from that message. As someone who lost his loved ones to Covid, I am disappointed by your dishonesty. Shame on you.. learn some honesty from your fish.

Einstein

RIP little Boogers.

Susi Su

These are my favourite type of episodes. For some twisted reason I really enjoy hearing about how utterly untrustworthy, and lacking in basic morals, our governments are.

Another cracker! Incredibly eye opening indeed. I remember the FnM outbreak in the UK. It still makes farmers tremble with fear. Even to this day, it is standard practise to disinfect boots if you are visiting a variety of cattle farms (former environmental health and department officer). As per usual, the private sector is stringently covered in red tape and safety, yet it seems the government ethos is 'Do as I say, not as I do.'... Just another Tuesday!

Jackson

Your a freaking hero brother! Don’t ever stop! Tonight’s episode was absolutely perfect. Thanks for all that you do and the risks that you take for this country and this world. Your are loved.

G. I. Gurdjieff

YES! Every 90 seconds or so I have to refresh. Bummer!

Ian Cain

Bat soup is more popular in the US than previously thought, eh?

William Matthews

Frightening and enlightening all in 30 minutes! I don't trust the government and never will....sad

Liz Barton

Another fantastic episode!!

Joel McCune

For me the most disturbing episode yet because of my lack of faith in my government and that common sense still exists.

Mushman

I had a great big, but horrified, laugh when AJ said something like if you're not to terrified, then think about joining our patreon family, 😂 Excellent episode! Something I didn't know much about. Thanks so much AJ, Heckle fish and the whole team for all of the hard work you all do! Lots of Love from Idaho. 🌲🌲🥰 ❤️❣️

Patti (Pads)

I ALWAYS have issues trying to play WF? eppisodes on the Patreon link. Sometimes it works after several refreshes. Sometimes I have to wait until the next day to see the episode on YouTube. Tried alternate browsers to no avail. The Patreon money was not well spent.

George Kuhn

Man... it seems like every country has some form, Right? Scary shi.... err stuff!

Patti (Pads)

Ticks have always been my most hated insect/animal period. Great episode!

John Lancaster

I'm so sorry for the loss of your precious Boogers! RIP It's always so horrible and heartbreaking to lose a member of the family. 😢 Sending Love and Gentle Hugs ❤️🫂

Patti (Pads)

Stay strong Wima! We're WF family!

Bonzbeasty

Gino are you here?

Jeb

Anyone else having issues with the video playing? 😩

Stephanie Ford

I thought the Kansas facility was a no go when they tried to move it years ago, I guess it was just delayed.

Daniel Wasserott

Thank you! That means more to me than you could ever possibly know!!!❤️

Wilma Titzgreaux

If you go to thewhyfiles.com and you can post a pic on #inthewild. Losing our animal brothers and sisters is devastating. Boogers was lucky to have you, and I'm so sorry my friend💙

Bonzbeasty

OMG! I haven't even finished watching the episode yet I am already starting to worry about the future of the show and the safety of the crew. Man! With what's been going on recently, stay vigilant, AJ and the crew! What a job though! I salute all of you!

Steven Shi

Absolutely terrifying!!! How many of these facilities are there!? What else is going on?

pheobekate

WOAH! Ticks. Stressful and excellent episode!

Trish Edwards

Reminds me of the Hounds of Baskerville

Bonzbeasty

Combine germ warfare research with the live gene editing potential of CRSPR (Nobel prize winner CRISPR) and it’s a whole new world.

Jane Harper

That was one hell of a doosie! I vaguely knew of Plum island and the lyme disease controversy but WHOAH.

Shawn Grant

I hate ticks. Great episode, but bloody hell.

Colin Butterworth

Oh, damn. This is such an important episode. Thank you, AJ and WF team. People need to know that the government and unelected officials have been, and are, very capable of experimenting on humans. Pure evil. It's vital people wake up and really look at what's going on. Those of us who have clearly seen the truth of the events these last few years are beyond horrified. As always, Hecklefish points out the obvious. Lol! Maybe on the podcast you can someday investigate the depopulation conspiracy....just curious…I’d love to hear the truth. 😊

Amy_OnlyForHecklefish

Does anyone know the email address to the WF team? Gotta send in my picture of Boogers (RIP😭) and my Hecklefish plushie.

Wilma Titzgreaux

Joining patreon……single best decision I’ve made in such a long time!!!! Thank you AJ and team! Love you guys!!!

Good one A.J. And crew. Cheers!
