It’s hard to give so much of yourself away, again and again, and still be OK. You’re a great guy and you have an awesome team from what I’ve seen. You're looking pretty spent. Maybe dial it back it bit and not push yourself so hard. The compilations are great because they they are a couple of hours long. It's kind of disappointing to wait a week or more to get an episode that is like 18 minutes long. Keep up the good work. You're real fans will still be here. Quality over quantity. Stay well. Aj, I love the show. But I agree with many of the comments about what matters most for the why files is the story you tell, not the AI and production quality. Film it with a phone of just you talking and we'd watch it. Somewhere along the way it was decided that the AI stuff was critical to this. But tell me this, is that what made the why files great? No! It was the stories you told! The constant broken promises are tough. I'd rather a guaranteed bi-weekly schedule over constantly missed weekly ones. But what I'd prefer most is that you realized that what made this so big were the early on episodes that you cringe over. You might cringe at them but that's what made this work! If it ain't broke don't fix it. Adding the AI would've been great, had everything still flowed as promised. But it seems the focus is so heavily on editing and visual perfection now that it doesn't allow for weekly drops or even just consistency. We fell in love with the early episodes because it was the story we came to see. I hope this message gets to you because if you realized this, your life seems like it would be less stressful. We don't want or care for ai/editing perfection. We want your story telling. Atleast I do.

Patreon members are essentially the shareholders of the company, if you put it in those terms. The CEO of a company isn't expected to answer to the people he sells his product to, but he is expected to answer to the shareholders who keep him in business. I miss the old Why Files. If it has become too much to stick to a weekly schedule, that's perfectly okay. However, you need to release an update about your future plans and stop making false promises. If you have to transition to one episode a month, then at least inform people. Otherwise, the shareholders will eventually "sell their stock" in the company because they cannot trust it.

AJ u don't have to make things Absolutely perfect or anything like that.. even the episodes u don't like we all do so that should tell u something.. let the new guy try editing it.. I'm talking it that's the issue since that update was on Monday and it's now Friday and still no episode even tho u said u were ahead.. let him try so u can get back on schedule and make ur members happy.. we will understand if things don't look right cuz we will know about the new editors and then we can let u know if we like the new editing or not.. shoot u never know we might like it more.. great advice. I like the ai cut scenes but would rather have more content of the storytelling that got me watching in the first place. I think John titor and the dodleston computer messages got me hooked and I didn't even see the screen for those 2. my girl was listening to them on her phone and I was across the room on the otherside doing something else but kept listening. I think teslapigeons idea is great, I just don't see it being considered. thats quite unfortunate too. I think a lot of ppl would be placated by that.

I think that AJ just needs to take a break. He seems too depressed and overloaded. Definitely depressed though. I feel his pain.... I think he needs a good 6 months break and maybe he can give the reins to the new crew for a while.... I think a good model would be to have no why files at all for let's say 3 months. AJ could work with them behind the scenes at his leisure for those three months and just mold them into exactly what he needs without the pressure of deadlines... Then starting at 3 months the new editors show us what they got (maybe call it "why files lite " while they have the reins) and the episodes could be 10-15 minutes.... AJ would completely leave the why files for 3 months and take his lovely wife to a spa retreat without cell phones or computers..... then at 6 months AJ comes back in and everyone works together to produce the genuine why files. It could be like a Christmas present 🎁 to us all! AJ gets a new start, and the patrons aren't expecting videos, and getting angry and leaving patreon. I'll still be here and I know a bunch of others will stick around.

I don't expect an episode every week but I did enjoy knowing that every Thursday we were getting a video. Whether that video was 10 mins, 30mins or even 50. I like your idea of a poll. I love the idea of community. I also love supporting this channel but it has been disappointing these past several months. I don't expect anything except communication and a fun community. These past months have really taken a toll on alot of people which is understandable and people act out. It's human to react to have something regular be taken away into randomness. And you'll get a spectrum of reactions from everyone.

I may be in the minority here, but I don’t expect an episode every week. In fact, I would prefer if they were biweekly. I also don’t expect them all to be 40 minutes long. And while we’re dispelling assumptions, I don’t EXPECT early access as a patron. I support for ad-free episodes whenever they do arrive, and general encouragement. Maybe we can have a community poll to see what we patrons perceive the priorities to be. It seems like AJ is putting too much pressure on himself under the guise of what the audience expects.

How about patreon gets the uncut video draft and youtube gets the story with the ai stuff and production. That way patrons gets the story without all the editing and we would still watch it on YouTube for the "vision" of the episode. Everyone's happy that way. Feed our hunger for story and our minds visually. It's kind of like on after files where you would read the script for the next week's episode kinda deal.

Hey guys! Big fan, occasional commenter here. It seems we are in a very strange time now. Since the first break was taken many, many months ago- you havent been able to get the train back on the tracks. That makes me sad for you- as well as for the fans. I teach sales, marketing and business development for a living. One of the things that I try to communicate to people in regards to posting, going live, teaching, etc is that predicability leads to reliability. I know and have known for the past 30 years that Im going to see The Simpsons at 7pm on Sunday. They played with time slots early on and went to Thursdays, but ultimately went back to Sundays and have stayed put for three decades. That's very much how this show started. The video's were much shorter, and far less reliant on AI cut scenes. Which is fine- because it proves that you dont NEED that. Ive actually seen quite a few comments from the fans saying that they dont love it and some want the old shows format back. You, as the creator have to be true to your vision for what you want to build- I get that. I just hope it's actually YOUR vision, and not a projected expectation of what your audience wants. The truth is....well..... we dont care. I first saw the The CIA Knows About the End of the World and was immediately hooked. I spent hours binging every episode before that, and have watched every one since. That's long before the "heightened" production values and longer run times started becoming the norm. I think I can speak for most of us when I say that it's actually the story telling that draws us in- to the point where when I speak about being a good story teller, I refer people to your channel. The truth of the matter is that stroytelling is the single most powerful form of communication that we have- and you are a master. AJ and team- we don't need the AI cut scenes. If you want to create hour long episodes, great! .... but maybe cut that hour into two parts, maybe even three. That way there is still a consistent drip of new content. It's far better to 1, be consistent in production. 2, avoid putting out repeated broken promises and 3, losing trust from your audience. On being a perfectionist- A lot of us say that... as a matter there are 3Ps to describe our avoidance of doing something... Im a "perfectionist" who is really a "people pleaser" and thats why im a "procrastinator." Those are just terms that indicate that we don't usually want to do something- whether it stems from shame, or fear of judgement or a multitude of other reasons. Another piece of conventional wisdom is that when we have multiple prioirites we actually have no priority. You guys are trying to do so much with a small team- the episodes, the podcast, science videos, after files, live streams, etc. Just choose the biggest rock- the show itsself and get the train back on the tracks. Once the new team is acclimated and the workflow has been optimized, get everything else rolling. Im a proud patron- not for the live streams or the early access. I have never sat in on a stream, and I choose to watch the videos with my family on YouTube. I am a patron because I love the show, the countless hours of joy it has brought me and the many people I have turned on to this show. I want to be a contributor and supporter of what I love- I vote with my time, money and by referring others to the things that I love- this being one of them. That's not going to change whether I need to wait 3 days or 3 months for a new episode. Just do us all- including yourselves a favor- no more promises. No more apologies. No more unnecessary amounts of AI. The recipe for success is Aj's charisma, the storytelling and appropriate amounts of the fish that drives my dog nuts. Lock yourselves in, scale back bells and whistles until you're in flow with each other- then be off to the races. As a fan, I love you guys. As someone in business - you guys are killing me lol. I hope none of the above came off as harsh, as that wasn't the intention. Just wanted to provide some loving, but honest feedback. Viva Why Files and Hecklefish '24!

I’m fine with this, but I really think you need to put a message out to all your subscribers and explain. If you explain, most will understand like us. If they’re left in the dark, the other subscribers may get frustrated. I dont know much about this type of business , but I know subscribers like to feel a kind of shared loyalty. I think it’s help you for what it’s worth.

Did you ever have a friend come over just to sit and bs while you got something accomplished? It's like that with compilations. I can put one on while I clean or reorg stuff in the basement... and my friends are there chatting. I have seen most of the episodes, so I don't need to be glued to them. Also, for those of us that fall asleep with the tv on - they are great to queue up to play until the tv turns itself off. Very soothing.

Right!!! Even Isaiah and ezekiel and Jeremiah. Some prophecies that never made a lot of sense before are now stunningly clear. Like Jeremiah 30:6-7. When it talks about men grabbing there loins like women. Never made much sense to me. But now it certainly does. I'm not slinging mud or casting stones and I'm certainly not judging. Hi guys…I thought you said we were getting a new video and members were getting it a couple days in advance. But still no video? Its now going on 3 weeks. I am sympathetic to the struggles going on. I really am. Those of us who complain a bit get a lot of hate from other members. It’s not fun. But at some point things need to change because those of us here have payed extra. Compilations are doing well because people want more. Having them all in one category, under one video, is a great Idea. It's binge worthy, at that point. It makes sense. Wow, AJ. It sounds like you are really struggling. The best thing you could have done, you did. Hiring editors. You really needed the help. I can imagine just how difficult that decision was, bc you don't want to feel like you will lose control over your baby. That had to be tremendously hard for you to do it. You knew we (patrons) deserve it. You guys have exploded and the demand is intense. It's moments like these that Uncle Ben's words are most important. "With great power comes great responsibility." Seeing as last night passed by, then this morning passed by, and now most of today has passed by, I'm assuming you had some issues with the edit. We all love your dedication AJ, to this show that we all love so much, but you've got to take your hand off the wheel or you're going to drop dead at your desk. There's no such thing as perfect. We aren't here for perfect. We're hear to hear you and Hecklefish tell stories. Are you hosting? Is Hecklefish being..... well... Hecklefish? Is it a good story? If the answer to those 3 things are all yes, then that's all that matters to the fan base. No one is going to critique the episode about "that scene should have been 2.5 seconds shorter, they held on that shot for 10 frames too many, Hecklefish's dialogue should have ended on that word instead of that word." (Ok, it's the internet so there is probably some asshole out there like that, but you know what I mean). Very happy to hear that you're attempting to step away from the edit bay. We all know how hard of a step that is for you. I imagine it's much like when a hoarder finally asked for help, but then panics and tries to save a bunch of their stuff while the helpers are attempting to throw it all out. Every fiber of your being is screaming at you to step in and your brain is giving you 1000 reasons why you need to do so, but you don't. It's one episode. Release it, get the feedback from the fans, and then make changes for the future if changes need to be made. I think you'll find that people will love the episode even without you editing a single frame yourself.

I love the comps! They’re doing well because you can put them on when going to sleep and they keep playing. Also because they’re themed. So that’s cool. The thing about getting a few weeks ahead, I get that too. I run a restaurant where we only do dinner shifts on the weekends. So every week by Wednesday we’re like “shit! What are we going to do for dinner this week??” And it’s a scramble. I want to get to where we have the next 3-4 weeks planned out. But we just can’t seem to get there! It’s hard! “What’s going to be on sale? What time of year is it? Is it the right time for that dish?” It seems like it doesn’t matter what field you’re in, getting ahead is hard. I’m just happy when I get to lay down at night and watch some why files 🥰 it’s the best part of my day. Old or new episodes. I love them all. Thank you guys. Love your work... personally I like compilations. I like being able to listen to multiple things that are similar at the same time. Helps me to connect dots. And I personally like longer videos. The way to keep this feeling of feeling good going is proper sleep and nutrition and maintaining what ever it is that is your release. Personally it's writing. What ever yours is do it. As a Patreon member and an old-school fan of the show I will admit exercising patience Is not my strongest attribute, but I’m happy to wait. As a person who went to school for this kind of thing, I never did anything with the knowledge of video production. I applaud you for organizing a great channel with equally great content.. Patreon member or not go to any other channel out there that does half as good a job with half as much content. Then keeps it tethered to reality. I think compilations are doing so well because it’s a grouping of like type of subject matter and because people are really missing new content if anything else you have ever learned about your fanbase, they’re very loyal so they are continuing to support you in any way they can. I listen because I enjoy the stories and I feel like every time I listen, something that I may have missed or forgotten about, the second,third, fourth, fifth time around it sticks and makes me feel like I haven’t stopped learning…. so I love the compilations ( many more reasons why than I list here…) but I really really get excited when the new episodes drop …. It’s a make a giant bowl of popcorn and get into my comfy clothes and watch it with my phone on mute deal for me 😆 I am a Patreon supporter of the channel… until it no longer exists May God keep that date ever out of reach.

Not saying anything you don't know, but don't be afraid to let go of certain aspects of TWF. The editors might have a different feel, but it likely won't be noticed by us as it does you, and eventually they will be "the feel." That frees you to write and research. I can sort of understand why the compilations have "more legs" longer term. You've added so many subs over the last couple years that many here likely haven't been able to go back and see the entire catalog. This is an easy way to do it, organized by theme, plus it might draw in new people too because of the organized themes.

AJ, just remember, the things you enjoy or think are "good" might not always align with what your audience loves or wants. Your older videos were what drew many of us, including me, to your channel. I remember watching your Antarctic mysteries video about Admiral Byrd—I was instantly hooked. The way you told that story was unique—short, compelling, fascinating—and unlike anything I’d seen before. Sure, you added some debunking at the end, which pissed me off at first lol, but I also understood why you did, the point is, those straightforward and engaging episodes are what made this channel special. Your recent desire to over-produce and extend episodes seems more about your own meticulous perfectionism than about necessarily serving the audience, or the algorithm. Sometimes, less truly is more. So, I’d suggest to tread lightly and not to criticize your earlier work too harshly. Those simple, original videos are what made us fans in the first place. I love the compilations because I get to listen to your take on specific subjects while being entertained for a respectable block of time. I also get to rewatch the old shows. AJ, please take care of yourself. I’m so glad you’re in a good mood today. But what Freckles (?) said is true. Let them do the editing and you keep writing. This is my comment…you hired them for a reason. They must be talented and see your vision. I have some knowledge of having to work yourself through a major physical issue. I have breast cancer and just had a double mastectomy. I hate feeling so tired and not being able to function Ike normal. And I still don’t know if I’ll have to have chemo and/or radiation. BUT coming and watching The Why Files makes my day. And I love the compilations. All the episodes on one basic topic in one continuous play list with you and Hecklefish. Too much fun. So please take care of yourself and let the talented people I trust you hired give you a break. We love you.

Your combination of insightful documentary format and levity is nearly perfect. While AJ could carry the show wonderfully by himself, Hecklefish brings a lot to the table as well. He's what makes the Why Files a standout. Maybe there's a need for more like him. Michio Kaku needs a goldfish.

Beautiful advice. I myself just suggested they could release the uncut video here on patreon and upload the visual helping video on YouTube. Everyone here gets the story and we would rewatch the YouTube cut for the visual. It should feed everyone's hunger for content.

I’m not leaving yet but I understand the sentiment. The AI stuff is particularly frustrating. I would rather just see AJ and Hecklefish than a bunch of AI content, especially after the episodes on Dead Internet Theory and AI.

Your early material is why you’re true fan base was turned on to your production. It was/is just as good as A.M. in its prime back not too long ago. Story telling seems to be your strong suit. Quit apologizing to your audience, do things on your own time, and entertain.. dummy
