DAY6 - The Book of Us: The Demon Album Listening Party

Comments

I love your reactions and your commentary so much it bring me so much joy to see someone's journey with day6 and loving and appreciating their albums. I remember watching your first reaction video to day6 and i had also just got into them. The demon was the very first album i listened from them and i fell in love with the whole album i was listening non stop to that album then i decided to read the lyrics and man the was a whole experience i didn't know how much i was missing but the songs itself are so good. They write such beautiful and relatable lyrics for everyone to make some sort of connection with. Its so hard to choose a favorite TBOU album but for me it the demon because thats what got me into day6. Im so grateful for their timeless music. Thank you for your reactions

Michelle

heehee i noticed this too!

I hadn't really noticed that the POV is from the outside, thanks for pointing that out! You're totally right about the lyrics having a good shot of indifference in them. Feels like the anger is coming more from a place of impatience, so I guess it makes sense that it's not TOO rage-y (but I want more! haha).

mianne

I agree with you on STOP. They just didn't make use much of their vocals to express that rage but I kinda also get the feeling of someone just being indifferent to someone's anger seeing as the song was actually written in 3rd person POV. So it was written from the POV of someone who knows both parties and got to listen to both sides and felt that the relationship was actually helpless. But i also kinda want the song harder anyways tho it's one of my favorites in this.

Watching you analyse and relate to lyrics like this is fantastic to watch, your DAY6 reactions always feel very special. I love sincere emotional lyrics, and I'm a sucker for a concept album, so I really love this project. Even if a couple of the songs aren't necessarily ones that I'm going to be listening to every day, the cohesion in the story they're telling really makes me appreciate the album as a whole. My favourites are definitely Tick Tock, Afraid, and Love Me or Leave Me. Three of my favourite DAY6 songs from the ones I've heard so far.

i guess that's just talent but honestly, just bcuz they say they don't, doesn't mean they don't, meeting people around them who have similar lifestyles is actually common since they understand. some fans like to believe their idols won't be dating anyone but a couple of years later, when they find the leisure to, they'll be talking about their dating experiences over shows like life bar cuz it happens and its part of life, the dating news that does get revealed is often of the most hot celeb of the time and if they can find the time, i'm sure anyone who wants to can. i remember jackson jokingly mentioning he picked up korean through dating and that might be a joke but there has to be something to it for him to have the leisure to say that. sorry... i ranted, but i'm just saying this thing is more common than we imagine cuz lets be honest, we don't know about their lives behind the stage

hi_k99

Did you just miss the small Dowoon parts in Day and Night? Hahaha, Day and Night has been my favourite song by DAY6 for a while now, ever since I first heard it I just fell completely in love. But to be honest, all of these songs belong to all time favourites, if I could only choose one album to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be this album. Just so freaking good, I'm still in awe of how amazing these men are. Also I went full on sob mode reading the lyrics and listening to Afraid again...

(sidenote: given what your faves were on the Book of Us albums, I'd highly recommend Onewe's IF, and Lucy's Farther and Farther, very emotional, excellent delivery, intense heart-breaking buildups... they feed the emo soul well)

Made the excellent choice to listen to your album reactions for Entropy, Negentropy, and Demon while I worked today. Thank you for your reactions! Your commentary was so great! For this one in particular, I really appreciated how you considered the order of the songs and how they told the relationship story. I'm definitely someone who focuses on the music more than the lyrics, and Demon is one of my favourites for Day6 because of the musical journey, but I hadn't put much thought into the lyrics to be honest (I know, shame on me). But your interpretation of 1 to 10 being the desperate, defiant post-break-up negotiations was completely eye-opening for me! So much of this album is surprisingly upbeat musically given the lyrics, and you really made a lot of that make sense for me. Great commentary! I have been missing out not listening to your album listens sooner!! And I totally agree about wishing Stop was a just a little more biting. It starts off so aggressive but I wish it got a bit angrier music-wise. Whenever I listen to it I always feel just the slightest bit let down cuz I want it to rage a just little harder. Tick Tock is definitely a fave of mine. It isn't one that I seek out a lot, but they way they use the music to complement the lyrics and clock themes is just great. Especially how the vocals feels like they wait just like a teensy bit too long to come in on a lot of lines, like they were waiting or trying to think of what to say and they're forcing something out into the space to keep the conversation going.

I also LOOOOOOOVE the pre chorus in love me or leave me and how hard the chorus goes, its just awesome! And that stuttering part sungjin does in STOP! just hits different! Afraid, instrumentally and with sungjin's pre chorus and then the way brian starts the chorus (bias wrecked by my bias here)!!!! its such a beautiful song that carries that nostalgic sad feel perfectly! i especially love the drums in the chorus and how jae sings along with the beat, its entire composition is such an intricately designed murder weapon!!! I just love this entire album as a whole, these are prolly the songs ive listened to most often this past year and it just doesn't get old!

hi_k99

thank you so much for your reaction! your thoughts and interpretations truly made me appreciate this album, which i already love, even more.

ellen

I want to know! These idols don't have time to date most of the time

KpopPrince

I feel the same way about bands I love. "Ah, he got married and now his music sucks." or "he's using again so we're going to get some wild stuff." It's definitely kinda dark haha

KpopPrince

May is PACKED with comebacks and I still want to diversify so we'll see!

KpopPrince

the way u talk about the lyrics being relatable reminds of this interview day6 had on BUILD series when they released gravity and the host asking young k on behalf of the whole fandom "WHO HURT YOU MAN?!" the way brian seemed flabbergasted is still hilarious!

hi_k99

Young k lyricist coming to kill me emotionally, as usual. I still have not had the courage to listen to Negentropy, just the You make me made me cry. Love me or leave (with Afraid) is my favourite in this album, but I took it on a bit differently, at least in relating to my experiences (tbf mostly not super healthy): you both know it’s over, but one person is trying to avoid giving a definite end to the relationship and just keep going through the motion (hoping maybe the other person will end it for them), while the other person is aware of all this and just wants a straight answer. Sunjin’s Afraid demo version is superior in my humble very personal opinion, but this is this one of the best Day6 song for me and hits so hard. Unrelated, Japanese tracks go so hard I love them.

wowoooowow

IKR! DOesn't jae sound heavenly in the day and night chorus!!! it reminds me of him in BE THE CHANGE, can u plz react to it, its a song he participated in for a webtoon in which one of the characters is based on him cuz the artist of the webtoon is a myday, but besides that the song in itself is such a masterpeice and jae is such a sweetheart to support a fan by participating in the song, its a really beautiful song, plz check it out!

hi_k99

This album battles with Entropy for me for the best Day6 Albums, but probably beats it out for me because while Entropy has some absolutely amazing songs on it a few in the first half of the album are less memorable for me. Whereas every song on this album is a straight 10/10 for me (With Love Me Or Leave Me and Afraid being 12/10 lol) and that's so rare for an entire album to 100% fit a persons taste! I also love how the thematic motif is so strong in the album, like you said step by step every song so clearly documents the downfall of a relationship- I can almost picture the protagonists like I'm watching a movie. When I reached '1 to 10' I was like "Gasp, they're bargaining to try to get back together?" as if I was seeing a couple I knew in real life make questionable choices lol. Is it bad that this Album makes me selfishly appreciate the guys having ups and downs in their relationships because it gives us emotional masterpieces like this?

Ally

Love your comments, love your reaction. 😭 Shit, whenever I listen to Afraid I start to cry terribly, that song hurts so much. And yes, Day6 emo are one of the best things in life, lol. Do you think that sometime this month you can react to Gravity? I want to see your reaction to the beautiful love songs that Gravity has as the beginning of this incredible saga. 💛

I heard a lot of new things from this album on this album listening party. Your two faves which are LMOLM and Afraid are also crowd favorites!! I'm so okay when you dissect DAY6 albums this way. It's funny cause DAY6 doesn't only make you feel but think a lot of things. It's so funny because before this recent comeback, DAY6 would always trend on Melon at dawn like around 12-5AM and fans are always amused why. DAY6 songs hit different during those times. I also like the perspectives you shared. Great content!!!!!

Love your reaction, love your commentaries. I also like how you related it to the stages of grief one party in the relationship goes through before even the actual break up happens. And yes 1 to 10 definitely sounded like bargaining. Been there. Listening to this actually helped me put a lot of things in perspective. Like how they could have felt. And I realize I had lots of those feelings too but I was maybe too proud to admit them It confused me where Zombie fits in this album too but it could actually have been the main problem here. They were depressed, they didn't understand that this is what they are going through. It's a hallmark symptom of depression to withdraw from your loved ones to feel alone even when you're with someone. So it could have been that they were just feeling the other person's being cold when it's actually them. And without properly communicating this, it just created more misunderstanding and distance. And I think that's how Afraid is such a fitting end. They finally start to understand their problem but they're afraid they're just hurting the other person but also that relationship has become their crutch. When the lyrics said I can neither let you go or hold on to you... i was just like shit, why is this so painful. I also like how in STOP they referenced a relationship built on sand because in Sweet Chaos, that's how they described that unstable feeling except at the time, they "liked". 😅 Also, hoping to see you react to Sungjin's Afraid. There was a reason they initially asked him to release it as a solo. Also since it's the only song that he worked on by himself, it felt really personal.

KK

Thank you for another great reaction! I enjoy listening to your thoughts on things, and also your perspective on the lyrics and how it relates to life. And it's nice that you share your thoughts during the track (even though you do have that impeccable timing of pausing just before a major thing happens in the song!). Like, you say it when it's relevant, not just afterwards when it might be difficult to remember back to e.g. the beginning of the track.

StarScribe

Not at all surprised that you enjoyed Love Me or Leave Me so much. While the Demon album was charting on Korean music sites, LMOLM was charting very high along with the title track. Definitely a fan favorite. Afraid trended pretty high on twitter, too. My personal favorites basically correspond with yours, but replace Tick Tock with Zombie (both versions). Zombie is the only Day6 song to actually make me cry, so I have to rank it high for how much it made me FEEL during a low point in my life. I know you gave no indication when you'd listen to it, but can't wait for you to hear Gravity. This album was really a big change from not only Day6's sound at the time, but also their lyrics, as almost every track uplifts your spirits and just has you grooving. A much lighter load after the overwhelming experience of the rest of the TBOU series.

chibikim

Relationships seriously seem to go through the same phases! Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone moves on from a serious relationship at a different pace. It usually takes me a few years.

KpopPrince

I've been on both sides of intense breakups, and these songs always get me. Love Me Or Leave Me is one of my top day6 songs of all time, it's so raw. And you're totally right, the lyrics are ESSENTIAL to getting the full day6 experience. I fell in love with their sound first, but once I started paying attention to lyrics I was completely enraptured

Jay Geris

By the way, I just noticed that you seemed to miss Dowoon singing at the 2nd verse of Day and Night! He sounded so good at that part. <3

Shaina

Damn, relistening to The Demon with you made me reflect on my past relationship. I'm going to be sharing some personal stuff, but I hope you don't mind! When it comes to the tracks here, I could relate to Day and Night, Stop because I was the one who broke up with my ex. From his perspective (I can only assume, but I'm not fully sure anyway), I think he would relate to Tick Tock, Love Me or Leave Me, 1 to 10 and Afraid a lot. I was the one who became aware of how we were so different, and we were both becoming miserable because of a lot of factors (family, personal issues, etc.). So, for months, I have been thinking of ending it, but I was scared too. I didn't want to hurt that person, but I knew that I had to do it because the relationship was getting pretty toxic for both of us. However, my ex pulled a "1 to 10" on me, begging me not to leave him. He asked me what I want, etc. Long story short, we broke up in a bad, unhealthy way. And reading the lyrics with you as you explained the narrative of The Demon made me relive those memories. I still have some anger left in me even though it has been years, but it's funny how I get to watch a relationship cycle as we listen to these beautiful tracks. Anyway, thanks a lot for listening to this! I really appreciate how you dissected the tracks, and it seemed like a lot of things were also replaying in your mind as you kind of ranted about the message :)))).

Shaina

Finally, The Demon! This is my favorite album from The Book of Us! Idk.. I just love emo songs. HAHA! Plus, the reason why I love this so much, they really wrote the songs beautifully in order. Like. Really beautiful. Sama as Negentropy. Both The Demon and Negentropy have a very melancholic feels that suck in your soul and for real, when listening to the album, my eyes never fail to teary. Every single time. Idk it’s just so beautiful.
