With the emotional stuff out of the way, we decided to wrap up our shoot. However, as is often the case, she looked so astounding in the light, I couldn't help but keep asking her for "one more shot," promising "this is the last one" for another half hour.
Finally, though I could continue shooting her endlessly, I stopped and said we were done. As we walked back to where we had put down our things, the sun looked so beautiful on her back I asked for a real "last shot." As is her nature, she didn't complain in the slightest.
That afternoon was a turning point in our friendship. We had been good friends before that, but over the course of that conversation that warm, sunny afternoon on the sand, I think we became closer. She told me that she trusted me 100%, in a way that she only feels with her brother and longtime boyfriend. We've talked at least once a week since then, and now are even discussing an international photo adventure together. Ah, moments that make memories.
