In my opinion, this is one of the greatest films of all time. Not anime movie, I mean film in general. This movie inspired so many movies like Black Swan and Inception.

There were many moments throughout the movie that hinted at the fact that the pop idol Mima was real. My favorite scene that showcased this was when the "pop idol" came and performed on stage with her old crew. The stalker and some other audience member's are shocked and "happy." Obviously cos with that scene we're seeing it from the stalker's perspective the audience around him is also happy. But when we cut back to the crew on stage you can see the other girls clearly confused and uncomfortable with a middle aged woman dressed like Mima singing with them. The audience for all we know could also have been confused and mocking her. But because it was being shown from the stalker's perspective, him and the crowd seems happy and the person on stage is "Mima."

Just so you can perhaps understand more clearly the purpose of the filming and always changing scenery more, look at a video on the subject from a youtuber named Super Eyepatch Wolf. It's a bit dramatic on the writing but clearly explain in details all that relates to it ;)
