It's incredibly important to every other movie as it explains what drives the two main characters, but it's definitely the weakest movie as a viewing experience. That being said, Movie 3 is absolutely amazing and probably my favorite of the entire series. Everything from Movie 3 on is just incredible. Unfortunately, the payoff for Movie 2 doesn't truly come until the very end of the series, but it definitely makes this one stronger once you see how everything pieces together. Movie 4 is the direct sequel to this, so you'll at least get some pieces to connect the dots around then. The second movie's something that you only start to appreciate once you watch the 4th and 7th.
