As much as I love the comedy arcs, Sorachi is really in his bag with the dramatic/serious arc with the writing, storytelling, emotional factor. This arc is also a nice way of cementing that even though the way they go about it is def different at the end of the day they have the same or a similar goal to Odd Jobs (and those affiliated).

Since the topic of animation in Gintama came up, Sunrise (the studio behind Gintama) also made Hathaway's Flash which is one of if not the most impressive thing animation wise to come out in recent years. The projects with their A team on them are as good as anything out at the time.
