You should definitely watch Ryouma-den. They have depicted the pre-Meiji era very beautifully and the characters especially Yataro (2nd MC) who plays as Mitsubishi founder was amazingly portrayed.

Taiga dramas (or period pieces where the setting is sengoku jidai, meiji era, etc.) are extremely popular (with old ladies and housewives that stay home all day, lol) and usually have high ratings throughout the year that it runs. There is a taiga drama every year and what the story will be about and who will be starring in it is always the talk of the town months before the next one starts.
