The whole reason young Mikhail saw his mother's "kind face" return was because the aphrodisiac kicked in. He interpreted it as the vampire getting rid of the demon inside of her and making her happy when it's really just a trait of all vampire bites that make the victim less likely to resist. We've seen the aphrodisiac effect be used time and time again throughout this show and it's always been used to reinforce this romantic view of vampires. Vampires, while powerful and frightening, are still displayed as being romantic. This is the one time they use the effect to convey something far more horrible. He was so horribly abused and his worldview so twisted that he saw the death of his mother as her being freed, because of a hunting mechanism we've seen time and time again in a positive light.
