I think it's actually reasonable that he's not putting it together. After all, he's not actually expecting to see Sylphie there, so it wouldn't really come to mind at all. It's been years since he last saw her or heard her voice, and she's got a completely different vibe now. And it's not like his situation HAS to be the only one of its kind, especially when you get out of the mindset of the fact we're watching a fictional anime with various plot elements and whatnot.
