It is actually proper practice to carry your sword on the left side, no matter which hand you use. This was because during the edo period, when everyone was carrying swords, people would constantly be walking past or next to each other and their scabbards would hit each other. Which, back then could be seen as disrespectful. Hence why whenever you see someone in modern times who practices Iaido, they always have the sword on their left side.
