How to Spot the Optimal Move
Added 2024-02-23 21:09:20 +0000 UTC
Hey all - Februarys monthly video that won was how to spot the optimal move. This is actually a really complex topic, but I hope I helped break it down a little for y'all
And ofc would just be very interested about hearing more of what you have to say on this type of topic in future patron content. It's invaluable info as someone trying to improve from mid level. There isn't enough content out there to learn to improve beyond stuff for beginners.

Would be really interested in reading the writing you said you'd done previously on Macro vs Micro decision making if you ever remember where you'd previously posted it / still have it.

I'm new here, so dredging up discussion on an older video, but could you please explain a bit why you don't consider Nick attacking with both Ursaluna and Ogerpon on turn 1 as an option whatsoever?

I think this topic is immensely important for even more experienced players. It's really easy to tunnel vision into one specific possibility and as a result seeing the big picture becomes an afterthought, when it's usually the best way to make a gameplan and inform your decisions. Thank you for covering this! I would love to see a lot more topics of similar depth in the future.

It's a really small optimization - if a Pokemon has both Imprison and Protect you can't use protect, so Detect gets around that. In my 13 years playing Pokemon I dont think this has ever come up for me

There is no. Detect is the move most fighting types learn instead of protect

Thanks for this!
Would love a team preview video. One of the things that prevent me from being able to make the Macro play is not having a great idea of what's in the back sometimes.

Those videos going over a topic in a brain dump-y way are informative and very fun :)
Also, I think that searching for optimal sequences of moves is a great topic to delve in more often. For example, you could create shorts where you take a particular game (from recent regionals like this, or something submitted to you) and show what you think would be optimal in your opinion.

I'm not opposed to letting the Elite 4 and up tier vote every month for battle video or discussion video since ultimately it's their teams/ideas I'm using!

Thank you for this one Wolfe, this video helped me with my decision making at a local premier challenge today and I came 2nd place! Even if I wasn't making the "optimal" move I was at least thinking through my moves better than usual. Keeping the macro game in mind also helped me not make game losing plays off of a gut instinct read.
Loving the patreon content, keep it up!

I love videos like these and how informative they can be, but I do wish there was a way we could have a bit of silly content with the informative, the battle videos were good to see you use something new and interesting which I personally think is a big part of what makes pokémon fun. I wish there was a way to have it all but sadly we don't have infinite time and if the community prefer this then I don't mind either way!

Absolutely loving these more competitive concept focused videos for the monthly video! I feel like these are way more valuable to me personally as well as just being more interesting to me than the random team battle videos from before. Thanks so much for listening and for the great content as always!

Very informative. The concept of micro vs macro gameplans is something I think I kinda knew but didn't really have it formally explained to me. Having it spoken and formalized helps me a lot.
Edit: I also wanted to say I think this is a good way to teach subjects like this with watching a battle and seeing the lesson put into action.
