Public Service Announcement
Added 2024-09-06 15:34:18 +0000 UTCHey everybody - as many of you know, I do monthly team reviews for Patrons in the Champion tier - and there's something I've noticed that's been popping up pretty often as the ruleset changes and a new year of VGC begins. I've noticed many, many players state that their goal for this season is to make day 2 at Regional level (and above) events.
I wanted to make this post because I think I've done y'all a disservice with how you might perceive making day 2 at an event. It is very, very difficult to make it out of day 1, without exception. The past 2 seasons have gone very well for me - I've made day 2 at every event except for 1 - and frankly, that feels like a miracle. There has not been a single event I've played in where I assumed I'd be able to make day 2 - every time it is a challenge.
If you are setting goals (for this or any season), my recommendation would be to focus on learning from your losses and focusing on improving, rather than trying to match a goal tied to your finish. In the long run I think this is healthier, especially in a game as volatile as Pokemon.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to my first regionals this January in San Antonio. I feel like I'm gonna learn a TON as I get my butt kicked ๐

2024-09-20 17:47:38 +0000 UTCIโm nearby Louisville too and so excited to finally have a regional here! First one ever I donโt need to grab a hotel for haha. Wishing you luck reaching your goal this season! My last event was Knoxville 4-5 and trying for at least a 6-3 at Louisville next month.

2024-09-14 04:59:45 +0000 UTCThis is the best mentality to go at it with, I went to Vancouver earlier this year as my first tournament ever (let alone regionals) hoping to win one and have a fun time but ended the day with 5-4 :) You'll do great!

2024-09-09 12:09:36 +0000 UTCWolfe, I think competitive has reached the point they need a new tier for professional players. Anyone who's made 2 top 8s moves into the new tier, maybe even top 16. Thoughts?? My personal goal is a 5-4 day. Went 2-7 at Knoxville and 3-6 at Indy with 3 last turn game 3 losses. Ready to be better in Louisville, it's my hometown and first ever event here

2024-09-08 16:02:32 +0000 UTCThank you for the kind words and ur right about everything u said but still I cant consider myself a good player if I cant do better than 1100 elo on showdown ๐

2024-09-07 14:15:36 +0000 UTCYou gotta bear in mind most people literally never go to a tournament EVER. Going to a tournament and winning any notable amount of matches is a massive achievement, day 2 is for the best of the best in any given region/tournament, and not making that cut leaves you far from being a "terrible" player.

2024-09-07 13:06:46 +0000 UTCThis reads more like a professor who is invested in their students' success rather than a content creator talking to their subscribers (which is awesome and makes Wolfey the national treasure that he is).

2024-09-06 19:08:39 +0000 UTCThank you for this post goat. I've always considered myself a terrible player cause I can't make day 2 but seeing this post and the comments made me realize I'm overthinnking and it's a super hard goal. I'll only be able to do 1 regional this year and I don't think I can end the day 6-3 so my goal for this regulation will be to go 5-4 and also escape 1100 elo on poke showdown!
Gary
2024-09-06 18:05:13 +0000 UTCAs someone who made day 2 multiple times last year, this is the best advice. When youโre attached to a finish or that you got CP, youโre hindering your potential and ultimately learning and being your best in each individual round is more important.

2024-09-06 18:01:45 +0000 UTCLove this. I will admit my goal is to day 2 but that's mostly tied to having gone 6-3 at NAIC and feeling like that is the next hurdle that I would like to clear at some point in the coming season. Obviously the volatility of the game does make that very difficult even if you do play well though

2024-09-06 16:23:12 +0000 UTCThank you wolfy! I would love to work on that! While most reginals and ics I have made 5-4 so Iโm always at the middle. The only regional I ever made 6-3 was at 2023 Knoxville. And if you hadnโt given me a ride that day I donโt think I ever would have made it that far lol. So thanks again for that and Iโm gonna keep trying to make a day 2 at one of these events!

2024-09-06 16:09:48 +0000 UTCStick to it. Make a w/l tally per matchup type to help see just how weak you are to murkrow/donzo if it's greater than 65-70% loss maybe consider making changes.

2024-09-06 15:46:10 +0000 UTCThanks for the advice, I definitely agree with this mentality. The game is much more enjoyable when you focus on the game and your play rather than the results you expect/want to achieve!

2024-09-06 15:43:38 +0000 UTCKentucky is going to be my first regionals and my goal is to win 2 rounds of swiss(if I win 1 round Iโll still be ecstatic) since itโs my first regional Iโm really just there to have fun. Also for the experience against top level competition!

2024-09-06 15:42:31 +0000 UTCWhen I have a losing streak in game ladder, i often think to make changes in team even it did well on previous occasions, so should i be making changes or stick to the team and learn to counter the opponents? My biggest threat in this reg is Haze murkrow and dozo.

2024-09-06 15:38:19 +0000 UTCVery wise to make your goals based on what you can control. You can't control how well everyone else around you will play, the mons they will bring, the RNG outcomes. What you can control is knowing how well you played, and how hard you work to continuously improve.
