Map Illustration Handout Question!

This was the map that I used for inspiration for the Green Dragon Lair, and someone mentioned having access to a version of the map (like this one) as a handout for other maps that I've done.

I spoke with the artist, and he's interested in potentially trying it out, so my question to you is -- are there any of my maps that you would like to see a hand drawn version created that might be used like an in-game handout to the players -- something with a rough layout of the place, potentially some character-written annotation, etc...?

Feel free to list any of the battle maps for which you think this might be interesting or fun, and I will pursue that with the artist and see if we can collaborate on one of the Map Pack releases. If you would like me to have him do this for a map I haven't released yet, I could also do that and surprise you.

Let me know what you think!

Best,

Jeff @ Morvold

Map Illustration Handout Question!

Comments

I will check with the artist and see if he'd be interested in doing something like that. I also liked the idea of making some kind of "handout" for other locations that were more roughly-drawn and annotated with rumor/speculation mixed with some truth.

I think maps of buildings (like in Phandalin) would really benefit from this, because it would let the players visualize places that don't need to be revealed slowly like a dungeon crawl.

For me I run the LMoP and DoIP back to back to teach new players. In the Wave Cave, I usually leave a map of Axeholm or the Temple of Abbathor (dwarven excavation). While I agree usually I make a rough map in little time. One of these would be helpful and on par with the Battle maps in professional look

So, these wouldn't take the place of any digital maps, but moreso be a "special bonus" if people thought it would be useful/fun. Maybe I will create a piece to go along with a future map, designed in the vein that you were describing (partially completed, roughly sketched, etc...). Perhaps as if it were a page from an old tome that had the original design of a place.

I wouldn't really use it too often and agree with Ryan. Also, if making those kinds of handout maps takes time away from making more digital maps, I think most people would rather have more digital maps.

I think it would be a great addition. One thing that might be cool to see is versions of player handout maps that are incomplete or erroneous in small ways.

I feel the same as Jens. It's really hard to know in advance which of these would be useful until it's time to prep a map for a game. In the past, I've just whipped up a quickly scrawled map. They're not beautiful like this, but then again I think the average adventurer who is creating a map as they're exploring is just trying to record the gist of the dungeon or area, not make it pretty. Function over form kind of thing. As such, the handouts I give tend to be just pencil / pen, one color, and typically not that accurate / complete. On the average this takes perhaps 5m to create, so there isn't a huge potential for time savings there, and almost always I'll want something to be inaccurate or left out. So even if one was provided, I'd likely have to modify it anyway.

It's difficult for me to predict which maps would benefit from those handouts. However, the handout looks super cool, and I would like to have them. :)
