Write a Custom Artifact - Community Contest!

[Art by Steven Bell]

I am planning to offer another monthly benefit for all of you wonderful Patrons in the form of a monthly illustration of an artifact or relic.

From initial feedback, I would like to keep these from being weapons or armor, but an object that can more easily be used by DM's for their own adventures and homebrews, either with the proposed write-up, or their own.

How does it work?

If you would like to submit an artifact or relic for consideration, please write a 2-3 sentence summary of the piece background, and a one sentence description of the artifact or relic and submit that as a reply.

Once we have all submissions, I will put those into a poll and have the community vote on the one they'd like to see illustrated most that month!

Here's an example template.

Using the image above, here would be my submission.

The Deadstone. This rough cut amethyst stands above one foot in height with dark purple hues and the greenish image of a trapped soul screaming from within. The Deadstone is a powerful artifact that holds the soul of a captured necromancer. It was plunged into his heart as he died, capturing his soul as it escaped his body and disallowing the body to be raised/restored through any curative magics. Only a powerful spell or force could break the enchantment and free the soul.

So, post your submission(s) over the weekend, and I will put them up for voting on Monday night (11/7)!

The winning submission will be provided to an artist to illustrate, which will then be released to the community for use!

A necromancer shield. It's is a worn dirty chipped shield with bones in the front. It's acts as a shield but the bones can be animated to fight as a skeleton, could also absorb a corpse to carry around a zombie with it's decaying visage on the shield, or any other undead.

A broken blade that when used alone, functions as a dagger, though the size of the hilt feels like it should be more than that. There's runes etched into the fuller. If you can find the ring that pairs with it, you can use them together to unlock its full potential. Runes matching those on the sword are also etched into the ring. Slide the ring in the fuller of the blade and a magical, glowing ethereal blade extends out from the dagger into another blade of your choice. Haven't thought of name yet. Maybe "Family Tradition". The story I thought about behind it that its a family sword passed down through generations that gets broken along the way. Instead of melting it down and putting it on the shelf, they get a mage to make it something even better.

The Unbroken Edge A blade with an edge that extends all the way down to its makeshift hilt, largely just blood-soaked rags and leathers wrapped around the obscenely-sharp edge. The sword is extremely sharp and easy to handle save for the inherent danger of holding it - anytime the wielder swings it, there is a chance that the blade will cut the wielder, its blood-price being rapidly soaked up by the 'hilt'. In exchange, it is uncommonly sharp, and it will do the same to the wielder's enemies, often guiding its edge to where it would shed the most blood.

Book of Scrybing This thick leather-bound book has the Divination sigil engraved on its cover. When a command word is spoken, the zipper-like bind on the back undoes itself and the book splits into two separate books, identical in every way. After being split, when anything is written in one book, it appears in the other exactly as it was written in the first. As long as these books are on the same plane of existence, the effect maintains. When the books are brought back together, a command word can be spoken to return the books to their original, singular state. As writings remain in the book from when they were separate.

Staff of necessity - a magical clockwork staff made of shifting gears and metal parts that can change configuration to deal piercing and slashing damage as well as bludgeoning. And some spells as well.
