Write a Custom Artifact - Community Contest!

[Art by Steven Bell]

We'll have another Custom Artifact Contest for February!

How does it work?

If you would like to submit an artifact or relic from your homebrew or current/future campaign for consideration, please write a 2-3 sentence summary of the piece background, and a one sentence description of the artifact or relic and submit that as a reply.

Once we have all submissions, I will put those into a poll and have the community vote on the one they'd like to see illustrated most that month!

Here's an example template.

Using a previous artifact, here would be my submission.

The Deadstone. This rough cut amethyst stands above one foot in height with dark purple hues and the greenish image of a trapped soul screaming from within. The Deadstone is a powerful artifact that holds the soul of a captured necromancer. It was plunged into his heart as he died, capturing his soul as it escaped his body and disallowing the body to be raised/restored through any curative magics. Only a powerful spell or force could break the enchantment and free the soul.

So, post your submission(s) over the week, and I will put them up for voting on Friday night (2/10)!

The winning submissions will be provided to an artist to illustrate, which will then be released to the community for use!

The Hand of the Machinist is a gauntlet made of a dark metal that covers the entire forearm, created by a legendary artificer who was both brilliant and mad. This artifact was once the heart of a technovirus that the artificer created, which slowly transformed those who were infected into mindless constructs, serving the machinist's will. The gauntlet’s surface is covered in a series of intricate gears and clockwork mechanisms, which move and shift constantly. Mysterious runes are etched into the metal, glowing whenever the gauntlet is used. The wearer of The Hand can infect those they touch with the technovirus. Meanwhile they are immune to the technovirus or any effect that seeks to transform their form. In addition, the wearer can create and repair constructs, and even control hostile constructs within a short range. (This is designed to be pretty system agnostic, but for D&D 5e I would recommend using spells like Mending, Summon Construct, and Dominate Monster as abilities for this item, adjusting spells and concentration depending on the power level you want. The technovirus can be anything you choose, but I would base it on a disease. If you intend on giving this to a player consider how they eventually lose control of the constructs, or you might have an army on your hands!)

Blessed Vial of Diedre: This masterwork glass bottle once belonged to a famed priestess named Diedre. She lived a virtuous life and healed many sick and cursed people with the holy water and cures she brewed. Now it is believed the Vial she used contain her cures now retains a part of her soul because it now carries on her mission to cure the sick and cursed after she had departed. When water is stored in the vial it becomes holy water, when holy water is stored in the vial it becomes enhanced to the point were it can harm a greater fiend or undead, when blood is put in the vial it becomes a healing potion, when poison is put in the vial it becomes an antidote, and if oil is put in the vial when burned it repels evil extra-planar creatures. Putting fiendish ichor into the vial destroys it and if a good divine spellcaster uses the vial it can also be used as a casting focus.

The scepter of the ghoul emperor. Nothing is crude as mere bones lashed together. A polished bone septor intricate scrimshaw that only undead could carve, those with endless hours to perfect to their craft. Is long and light enough to count as a +3 staff. Any creature within ten feet is vulnerable to necrotic damage, and makes death saving throws at disadvantage. Grants the attuned resistance to radiant damage and the ability to command any undead within 100ft.

The Smootherer An oddly-shaped metallic artifact, it has what appears to be a handle protruding from the top of a rectangular body with a beveled edge. The edge has been found to be slightly warm to the touch but little else is known about its origins. Its claimed to be devastating when used against opponents, however, it also is known to remove creases from even the most stubborn articles of clothing. You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, the weapon ignores resistance to bludgeoing damage. When you attack a creature with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, the weapon casts Feeblemind at 8th level, requiring a DC 20 INT save. This weapon has 3 charges that reset after a long rest. It can additionally cast the Prestidigitation cantrip at will. Proficiency with a club allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
