This Mountain Village is an interpretation of the village of Oztocan, from Keys From The Golden Vault module, which does not have a designated map and is mentioned only as the arrival site for a particular tomb.
The village is described as being within a range of mountains, and built around the crescent-shaped ruins of a destroyed citadel. It is approached by a dusty road and containing a river that goes dry for portions of the year.
The only buildings in town mentioned in the module are the Mayor’s House and a Dig Site, which has recently discovered an entrance to something below the village. Several other locations have been added and the town has been brought into reality.
As with any of these maps, it could easily be used to represent ANY town in your homebrew campaign or adventure, and has many great resources to link it to social or combat encounters, as well as other maps (i.e. the dig site leading down into a recently discovered dungeon).
BACKGROUND
The village contains over [30] buildings that include a barracks, tavern & inn, stables, farms, blacksmith, watermill and the Mayor’s home.
Several of the homes have small gardens and livestock, however, it is likely that the town imports a fair amount of their food from a larger settlement and supplements it with what they grow and raise in town.
The town is described as being run by an up and coming trading organization, known as the Couatl Company, and I’ve designed them to operate easily out of the tavern.
LOCATIONS
The Mountain Village of Oztocan has [4] notable location interiors provided, which can be used to support any narrative you wish.
Those locations include:
[1] Village Guard Barracks - operating under the direction of the town Mayor, this barracks houses some of the more permanent members of the village guard and their commanding officer. Due to the recent struggles for control with the Couatl Company, the Mayor frequently has guards stationed at his house, as well as watching the roads.
[2] Blacksmith - located on the north side of the river, this simple blacksmith provides goods and services to the surrounding community, mostly dealing with repairing wagons, shoeing horses, refinishing weapons and a few other tasks.
[3] Mayor’s House - this two-story home belongs to the Mayor of the town and his sister. He frequently has village guards stationed outside and within, and is constantly looking for ideas on how to secure his position of power against the growing influence of the Couatl Company.
[4] Tavern, Inn & Stables - located south of the river, this two-story inn contains both tavern and stables, as well as a headquarters for the main operations of the Couatl Company. While the lower floor contains the tavern common room and stables, the upper floor contains rooms for rent, the kitchen, as well as protected rooms and a small barracks for members of the trade organization, as they move to secure profit from artifacts below the city and assume power over the settlement.
