Kobold Swamp Temple Map Pack!

Hey guys!

We've got another awesome map pack and another great collaboration with James RPG Art for a wonderful concept scene and animation!

This map is an old, ruined dwarven temple abandoned long ago for unknown reasons and discovered by a group of kobolds and a Black Dragon that has come to lair here. The Black Dragon discovered a route into the temple by swimming through a large hole in the swamp and emerging out of a well within the temple, eventually attracting minions to serve it within its new lair.

As mentioned, we also have a great animated scene from James RPG Art to pair along with the location, as well!

James' RPG Art makes animated scenes to help players visualise environments and add immersion and tone to your games. He has created over 300 scenes from official WotC adventures and many unique locations that are often found in a D&D adventure. He releases 4 new locations each month for his patrons.

To download the Map Pack, please click on your Tier link below and the download URL will be listed there in map release order. These tiles have been added to the previous Seatower of Balduran links, so just downloading the previous links will show all of the files for this location now.

This Map Pack has a few different regions of play:

The Swamp

The map has a long stretch of swamp on the left side of the map, allowing the party to approach the temple from outside, perhaps having traveled there through another random encounter swamp map, like the Mere of the Dead Men. You would be able to run some Random Encounters there, or give them the chance to plan an approach into the temple.

The Cave

Behind the cover of some dense vegetation is a cave mouth leading into a tunnel and couple of natural caves. The caves are populated with mushrooms and could be the lair of a shambling mound, troll or other swamp creature of your choice that could be a combat encounter or something related to the lore of the temple. The cave also has a tunnel high on one of the walls (secret door) that leads to one of the walls of the temple, where a few loose stones give way to a secret entrance behind a banner.

The Temple

The temple itself has several chambers, and I've included a legend of the map to help with my general vision of each room and how I might use that.

Map Pack Legend

1 - Temple Entrance

A small island holds the ruined stones of a temple entry, long since fallen away from the stone. While the border has crumbled away, the stone door remains. Covered in vegetation and grime, it leads into the main entrance of the temple.

2 - Stairway

The doors open toward a long hallway that stretches downward. Torches burn along either side of the hallway and a handful of alcoves hold wooden barrels, crates and chests. Most of these items are either junk or traps. There is a wire trap at the base of the stairs that will cause the barrels to explode along the stairway, alerting the kobolds to invaders and damaging those on the stairway.

3. Entry Hall

This large hall is covered in grime and heaps of crates and barrels arranged in tiny barricades at each corner. A couple of dwarven statues remain, while others have crumbled and broken. The barricades provide cover for kobolds trying to guard against invaders, and also attempt to funnel foot traffic toward the center runed carving, which triggers a rock trap disguised overhead.

4. Dining Hall

This dirty chamber holds an array of rickety tables, benches and sitting crates and a table laden with stew, fish meat and crab. When the kobolds aren't patrolling or hunting, they often gather here to eat and relax.

5. Kitchen

This kitchen uses some of the leftover equipment from the dwarves and is primarily used to cook stews, cut up fish and prepare meals.

6. Kobold Barracks

Two northern chambers of the temple were used as barracks and are covered with dirty sleeping pallets and a few sitting options for kobolds to rest.

7. Mage's Room

The Black Dragon has attracted a follower in a sorcerer that is researching how to enchant a sphere of domination to expand the influence of the Black Dragon. It holds a private quarters in the temple, where it can conduct its research with the aid of a magical spell book that holds the soul of a trapped demon. The demon has made a deal with the sorcerer to use his soul as a means of escaping the book in return for knowledge and power in life.

8. Old Library

This large library has a working heath and heaps of books, mostly written in the dwarven tongue, upon its shelves. The sorcerer has been searching for books with particular symbols and so the kobolds have been rifling through the books, as able, looking for those that contain this symbol connected with the knowledge they're seeking.

9. Mushroom Cavern

Located behind tangles of vines and vegetation is a tunnel leading toward a couple of natural caverns that may contain a variety of potential foes, or perhaps serves as a food garden for the kobolds -- however you want to use it. A tunnel high off the ground (secret door) leads toward some loose stones in the temple, allowing a secret way in.

10. Supply Area

This small chamber serve as a supply dump for the kobolds, who allocate a small group to guard it throughout the day.

11. Old Library

This secondary library has additional tables, bookshelves and books that are being searched through by the kobolds under the direction of the sorcerer.

12. Deep Road Elevator

A remnant of the dwarven temple, this elevator leads to the Deep Roads underground connecting this location with other settlements and locations in the Underdark. It is functional, but the kobolds don't use it.

13. Refuse Heap

This smelly chamber used to be a meeting chamber for the dwarves, but it's been converted into a trash heap for all of the kobolds refuse. To keep it manageable, the Black Dragon managed to ally with a pair of Otyugh's who live in this chamber. They allow the sorcerer and kobolds to come and go, but will challenge others that enter.

14. Hatchery

This large stone chamber was potentially used for some of the dwarves' smithing projects, but has since been converted to a hatchery for kobold young. Several nests swimming in ragged clothes hold young kobolds while eggs warm upon loose stones near the fires.

15. Blacksmith

The dwarven forge is still in use by a kobold that mostly uses it to craft traps to lay about the temple and swamp entry. There are several bear traps and other similar devices laid about the exterior of the temple. There may also be a construct of kobold design here the party would have to content with. The smith has a helper who found a crack in the stone and dug out a small tunnel that leads into the dragon's lair, using it to occasionally steal items when the dragon is away and keep it in a chest within the tunnel.

16. Lower Hallway

This section of hallway leads from the Main Hall to the Shrine where the Dragon lairs. It is littered with debris and clutter, much of which is trapped. The kobolds avoid this hallway, using it mostly as a defense against invaders.

17. Dwarven Shrine & Dragon Lair

This large shrine is lair to the Black Dragon and holds a large stone well, several stone benches and the dragon's hoard. A large bronze dwarven carving hangs upon the wall, illuminating the chamber with a warm glow. The dragon uses the passage between the well and the exterior hole to enter and exit the ruin.
