Next Map in Progress - Phandalin Buildings

I am going to be continuing my work on fleshing out the Phandalin Buildings from LMoP and continuing with Barthen's Provisions, Edermath Orchard and Alderleaf Farm.

If there are any other specific buildings or encounter maps from LMoP you would like to see, let me know!

Best,

Jeff

On further examination, I determined that most of the non-grid large version are not at the exact same resolution, but each are at the same grid dimensions. Here are my complete results, in the case that someone finds them useful. Set 1 Dimension Large Grid Large NoGrid Lionshield Coster: 30x23 200px/5ft 200px/5ft Old Owl Well: 39x37 135px/5ft 135px/5ft Shrine of Luck: 37x26 175px/5ft 175px/5ft Sleeping Giant Inn: 39x34 150px/5ft 155px/5ft Stone Hill Inn: 35x20 205px/5ft 215px/5ft Set 2 Agatha Home*: 17x16 256px/5ft 256px/5ft Miners Exchange: 35x24 185px/5ft 190px/5ft Townmaster Hall: 43x24 175px/5ft 185px/5ft Venomfang Tower: 26x20 256px/5ft 256px/5ft Wyvern Tor: 30x45 135px/5ft 140px/5ft Set3 Alderleaf Farm: 35x24 170px/5ft 176px/5ft Barth's Provisions: 35x24 176px/5ft 186px/5ft Eldermath Orchard:39x28 160px/5ft 170px/5ft *: Note: Agatha Home has no "Large" or "Small" version.

I am happy to work with you and experiment to find some optimum settings, if you want to PM me. I have examined Phandelver Set 1, and made the following calculations, based on the "Large" versions, assuming that the grid was intended to be 5ftx5ft squares: Lionshield Coster: Scale: 200px/5ft Grid: 30x23 Old Owl Well: Scale: 135px/5ft Grid: 39x37 Shrine of Luck: Scale: 175px/5ft Grid: 37x26 Sleeping Giant Inn: Scale: 150px/5ft Grid: 39x34 Stone Hill Inn: Scale: 205px/5ft Grid: 35x20 I put that here, in case others may find it useful. This means that you can set a map in Roll20 using the "Grid" calculation, set your Roll-20 scale to 70px=5ft and then import and size the map to the available space, and have the Roll20 scale be "correct" to what you (the artist) intended.

Jeffrey Knodel

Well, I imagine that it will be an issue for not only you, so I would like to work together to figure out a consistent way to communicate it (to everyone) moving forward. I must admit that I'm more of an artist than a technical map maker, so determining the best way to communicate appropriate sizing ratios is something I haven't developed a sense for. There is a specific Roll20 option in Dungeondraft that saves the map out at 70 pixels, and I've read that will make it basically fall "in line" with Roll20's native grid mapping. The issue (for me) is that I want to provide people with the highest quality map I can, and so I end up saving the PPI levels out at higher levels (depending on the map). For Roll20 specifically, I've always just used the advanced setting to custom place the grid atop the map to size to my liking, but I'm wondering what value(s) I should be looking for when I save the map out that would help you get the values that YOU need? When I Export a Map, I can choose the Grid PPI, which impacts the pixel dimensions -- is that the number that would help you the most?

Jeff Todd

I appreciate your responsiveness. Assuming that the grid is 5'x5', then Lionshield Coster Large is at 200 px / 5 ft. And if my algebra is correct, that means that the Roll20 scale would be 70 px = 1.75 feet. But the grid to pixel ratio does not seem to be consistent across each of the images, so I don't think that one setting will work for all of the images. (For example, Old Owl Well Large seems to be at 135 pixels / 5 ft.)

Jeffrey Knodel

Many of the maps are 35 x 24, but some deviations definitely occur. Would it help for me to list that dimension (the grid x/y dimensions of the map) somewhere in the download file name? That wouldn't be that hard to do, if it'd make it faster and easier for you?

Jeff Todd

Thank you, that is helpful. I was hoping that each of the "large" images were captured at the same scale, so that I could load them at a 100% size, and then tell Roll20 that they were all at the same pixel/ft scale, rather than scaling them individually.

Jeffrey Knodel

Lionshield Coster is built on a grid of 31 x 23. You can certainly treat them as 5ft squares, if you wish. My build process generally sizes objects and assets using that metric as a "reference point", though if/when I use the maps in something like Roll20, I will usually custom fit the grid to the map to allow for more space/room to maneuver in hallways, etc... I find that it may cause some of the assets to be a little larger than they'd normally be if it were a "real" room, but from a playability standpoint, it offers up the best experience. Does that help?

Jeff Todd

Or, I guess to ask it another way, is your grid on the grid version intended to be 5ft x 5ft squares?

Jeffrey Knodel

Yes, for example, LionshieldCosterNoGrid_Large is 6000x4600 pixels. The pixel calculation is easy. The question is what is the "area" of the map covered. If it were a picture of 60 ft x 46 ft, for example, the scale would be 100 pixels per foot.

Jeffrey Knodel

Hi Jeffrey -- on my system, if I highlight the JPG, it tells me the pixel dimensions of each file and the estimated size. Does it provide that for you, as well?

Jeff Todd

Can you tell me at what scale the "large" versions are generated at, in pixels/feet?

Jeffrey Knodel

Hey Randy -- Yeah, I've been releasing them as groups of maps for this, but I am getting the 3 maps ready to release on Patreon here today!

Jeff Todd

I saw that you posted Alderleaf Farm on reddit but can't find it here on Patreon. ..

Edermeth Orchard is done!

Jeff Todd

Very cool! I'll be grabbing aaaaaaallll these
