In the hot desert climate of the eastern lands, a gladiator's arena lives within the heart of a city that thirsts for blood and battle. Built to support large and small-scale encounters, this medium size arena provides entertainment and sport for the populace, as well as lucrative opportunities for slave masters, gladiators and the many merchants that support the fights, which have been known to go on for weeks or even months.
Surrounding the arena are camps, tents, wagons and makeshift markets offering a variety of goods and services, all surrounding the traffic to and from the arena games. The shouts of hawkers can be heard in early morning and go throughout the day, as citizens flock to the games and exit with a multitude of desires.
How do my players fit in?
Players may need to travel to a desert environment and/or city to speak with a particular merchant or person in power. They may be enslaved and taken to fight in the arena, or perhaps to be sold as slaves to a slave master. They may also find themselves trying to track down a guide or person in possession of items or knowledge important to their quest, and such a person may well live among the merchants and travelers camped about the games.
Adventure Hooks
1. A powerful noble holds the authority to grant the players' request for something, but they need to get on his good side. He is said to be fond of the Games and is found there every day. Perhaps some friendly wagering, or even fighting, might spark his interest, and patronage.
2. A slaver's company ambushed the party in the night and have sold them into bondage to fight in the arena for their lives. The players must travel in captivity, learning of their captors and their destination, as well as determine a way to escape.
3. The Games have begun, and the local hawkers have been shouting since dawn for volunteers to fight against the gladiators for fame and fortune! How hard could it be to defeat a gladiator!? They're not adventurers!
