Mage Tower Map Discussion!

Alright, you guys have spoken -- you want a Mage Tower!

Let's start discussions about what exactly you would like to see.  Is this a remotely located Mage Tower in the wilderness? A Mage Tower within a large city? Is it a Mage Tower Dungeon (i.e. a mad mage, an evil necromancer), or is it a place of learning and mystery?

How many floors do we want to see?  How big do we want the floors to be?  Are there any specific tropes or designs or things you would like to see presented?

Let me know your thoughts!

PS - I didn't even intend it, but I kind of like this picture, where you have the tower itself, but then a little village (maybe of novice enchanters attending a school/college) around the tower, but that may be a map for another day!  Just a thought!

There are a lot of these ideas that are going to be incorporated into the planned tower. The lower level will be primarily what you describe first -- experimentation rooms, portals, training rooms and the like. The level below that will be a testing ground for initiates that takes place in the caverns below. The 2nd floor is mostly housing for higher-level students, as well as some guest rooms for VIP's allowed to reside within the tower and not down in the village's tavern. The 3rd floor will be both a massive library/artifact chamber, as well as a test in itself, with teleportation circles you can use only after mastering them and doors that won't open until you've achieved certain milestones, or can answer certain questions. The top level of the tower will be a large meeting chamber of the teachers and head wizards, and last level will likely be the top of the tower itself (open to its surroundings) with a large crystal and portal that can be used for a variety of things.

Sorry, a bit late to this post. What I would love to see is something like the following. A mage tower map which is used by an order of mages and wizard folk that are caught up in the affairs at a planar level. They focus on global matters that are happening around the material plane but also on events that happen across the multiverse that may impact the material plane. They are not completely remote but often have towers outside of large cities so they are somewhat distanced, but close enough to keep on eye on what is happening in that part of the civilized world. For a group like this, the tower would need: some teleportation circles, a testing laboratory, perhaps a level dedicated to planar portals, accommodations for members, accommodations for guests, a magic artifacts room, a training room, a library or two, a council chambers or meeting room. I have a group like this in my game and it has been so hard to find a mage tower that would house a group like this as it would be larger. I also have it in my game that I you walk up to the tower and try and enter from the ground floor, it looks collapsed and abandoned and that you actually need to be a member or have a special artifact that allows you to use portals they have from all over the world that will transport you into the nearest tower. It also has a bit of a Tardis thing going one, where it is much bigger on the indie than it looks from the outside.

I do enjoy the idea of an area below (caverns, structured or a mixture of the two) being a testing grounds of sorts. Could be a lot of fun to play though for a variety of scenarios (either pre-campaign to RP out your wizard's test, or if/when your magic user wants to advance in rank within the organization, etc...)

good morning. I like the idea of a multi-level tower of say 5 levels above ground and 2 below. Above ground lower levels would be common room such as storage of components, supplies, kitchen, bedrooms, studies, etc. Then mid level rooms would be say portal rooms, room for enchanting of weapons, alchemy, etc. Then upper levels would be luitenant mages and head mage. first level below ground would be a dungeon with maybe rooms for testing spells, captive creatures, disposal areas, etc. And maybe lowest level would be caverns. Where mage students would go in their final stages of training as sort of a simulator. They go in and face enemies real or illusion and have to use their newly acquired skills to try and defeat them.

Dorm-rooms? For students Magical workshop. For enchanting weapons, armors and other items. And testing.

Thomas Wesselhoff

Those are all awesome ideas!

Certainly -- what kinds of things do you feel would seem magical? Portals? Experimentation rooms? Imprisoned beings? Devices? Glowing items? ;)

Jeff Todd

I think what could really make this map stand out is if it really feels magical--most mage tower maps that I've seen just seem like ordinary towers with a few potions.

Devon Hollowood

Would be great to have something like that indeed :D

Ludia

I would like the larger inside as well, inside a larger city.

Lukaluke

I love the idea of a city, so that anything inside would really affect the rest of the citizens. I think evils , where the tower is in full control of the people below, or a tower where it is a guild are both fun ideas. Thanks for asking!

I'm definitely a fan of "mage towers are bigger than they appear", so the floors can likely be substantial in size. That's my plan, anyways.

Jeff Todd

Perhaps the inside of the tower is larger than the outside? Add some larger pocket dimension rooms? Or going with the mage college theme, perhaps different parts of the tower are dedicated to different schools of magic? I like the village outside the tower.

Steven Worker

Most towers available are too small to be of any practical use for a battlemap so my only suggestion so far is to make it large enough round to accommodate a battle on each floor ...That or have underground levels that are larger instead

Dread Maps

I'd love a good large city guild, I like your idea of a merchant area and experimentation higher in the tower.

SecretlyTheTarrasque

As for wilderness or city, I like the advantages of the city with city guard, or zombie hoard possibilities, et.c

I'm running an evil campaign so I'd be down for something that works for good or evil players. It's hard finding good maps for the stories I'm trying to put together. Yours are excellent and I can't wait to see more!
