These [2] maps are of the Upper and Lower Halls of the Dwarven Kingdom of Mhalduun.
The entrance to the Kingdom, through a mighty gate hewn from the mountain in which it resides, lay on the eastern side of the map, eventually reaching the gates of Mhalduun. The Kingdom is located near a large underground lake that feeds and underground river traveling down through the mountain, before emptying out into a small dwarven trade outpost on the surface.
The river separates the kingdom into the east side (largely the dwarven city/community) and the west side (largely the mining operation).
More details and area descriptions below in comments!
The Upper Hall contains the following rooms:
[1] Dwarven Trade District – Surrounding a large well, filtered and brought from the lake, is a dwarven marketplace, where merchants, craftsmen and travelers come to meet with, trade and converse with the dwarven people. Several homes of the more affluent or successful families surround the market, and it is frequently the place of announcements, celebrations, performances and royal decrees.
[2] Dwarven Shrine – A modest shrine to a dwarven god stands here, providing a place of worship and spiritual guidance to the community.
[3] Armorer’s Quarters – Located just northeast of the forge, the armorer and his family live and work in this chamber, improving on current designs and coming up with new ones.
[4] Priest’s Quarters – The head priest of the dwarven shrine lives here, meeting privately with dwarves from the community and studying the signs of their God.
[5] Dwarven Forge – A large chamber, open on several sides, holds the community forge, where the armorer/weaponsmith hones their craft and creates tools, weapons and other items for the community.
[6] Community Kitchen – A community kitchen is available to the community, which families take turns cooking and providing meals for their neighbors and kinfolk, as well as gathering to speak.
[7] Library – The communities library and center of magical study lay here, filled with books, scrolls and items of power that are managed by the dwarven mages that study and work here.
[8] High Mage’s Quarters – The office and personal quarters of the High Mage are located here, where he/she can pursue their studies, meet with students or handle private matters.
[9] Mage’s Quarters – The top student of the High Mage resides in this chamber, devoted to their study of the arcane.
[10] Mage Initiate’s Quarters – Dwarves wishing to learn the arcane ways live together here, under the tutelage and oversight of the High Mage.
[11] Royal Vault – The Royal Vault of Mhalduun rests here, guarded by dwarves and magic alike. Woe be the thief that attempts to breach these warded walls.
[12] War Room – The protection of the mountain kingdom, the mines and its people are paramount in this chamber, where the King and advisors discuss threats, new and old.
[13] – The Royal Quarters of a sibling, parent or offspring.
[14] – The Royal Quarters of a slightly less responsible sibling, parent or offspring.
[15] Miner’s Station – Located across the river, several dwarven miners live and operate here as they go about their work in the mines.
[16] Mining Foreman Office – Office and bed to the dwarf in charge of mining operations.
[17] Mining Storeroom – Storage space for supplies, crates, barrels and other necessary items related to the day to day operation of operating the mine.
[18] The Deep Lift – A large platform descends several hundred feet into the darkness of the lower mines, bringing dwarves and their bounty up to and from its depths. It is manned by a grumpy dwarf that controls the brake.
[19] Lower Lift – A lift here rises into the main floor, where goods can be transported to the smelting chamber for refinement.
[20] Western Shaft – The mine continues to the west, toward a large sprawling cavern, descending into the earth. (another map)
[21] Stairs to Main Level – Two staircases lead up toward the Main Level of Mhalduun.
The Lower Hall contains the following rooms:
[1] Fungus Farm - A large cavern filled with a variety of colorful fungi provides the dwarves with a decent supply of food throughout the year. The combination of fertilizers and nutrient-rich moisture from the nearby river/lake create fast-growing and nutritious food.
[2] Heart of the Forge - Near the center of the Lower Halls is the Heart of the Forge, a large pool of molten rock that fuels the fire of three Forge Stations located nearby. Water from the river in the Upper Halls is fed along a channel that surrounds the Heart of the Forge, creating water channels of different temperatures -- important when working with certain metals or materials.
[3] Forging Stations - Three forging stations border the Heart of the Forge, allowing dwarven smiths and craftsmen to ply their trade, hone their skills and produce amazing works of art and utility for the community.
[4] Northwest Clan Hall - This broad hall is home to many of the artisans, smiths and craftsmen of the community and has [8] homes encircling a large gathering hall.
[5] Open Temple - An open temple to their dwarven deity stands west of the Heart of the Forge, viewing and judging the work that the dwarves do. Many come to worship throughout the day, and the priest's chants can be heard echoing through the main hall.
[6] Great Lift & Storage - The Great Lift continues to descend through the Kingdom and down lower into the mountain, stopping here in the Lower Halls to provide smelted bars, ore and other goods to the community, as well as taking finished products, food and other goods back up.
[7] Southwest Clan Hall - This broad hall is home to many of the soldiers, guards and warriors of the community and has [7] homes encircling a large Sparring Circle.
[8] Southeast Clan Hall - This broad hall is home to many of the scholars, researchers and lorekeepers of the community, and includes [13] homes encircling a large library and gathering hall.
[9] Northeast Clan Hall - This hall contains [4] homes and features the Communal Dining Hall at which many of the other dwarves of the Lower Hall come to eat, gather and socialize.
How do I use this map?
| Players may want to have social encounters with different parts of the Kingdom, depending on your campaign/adventure – seeking out knowledge from the library, a service from the armorer, a rare trade good from the market found in here, a contact that lives in this area, etc…
| Players may have been asked to complete a task related to the western mining operation, whether it be to deal with personalities, issues or a threat to the mines.
| Players may need to infiltrate the mines and find a way through its other levels toward a particular goal (i.e. a rare gem, a newly discovered cavern, the only route known to access old ruins, etc…)
My intent is to add another section to this map every 1-2 months and build out a large network of mines, caverns and, eventually, another settlement or two to create some large areas across which to carry out a variety of plots/adventures.
Tier Rewards will be sent out soon!
