patreon

I'm wanting to hear your guys thoughts on Patreon's recent decision to change how fees worked. I already had a small conversation about it on Discord with those who are currently in it, but that only encompassed the $5+ guys, so I'm really wanting to get everyone else's thoughts and opinions on it.

I really don't want to uproot the patreon and completely move it to another service, as that'd be a huge hassle for everyone. Hopefully Patreon will change their mind and make it less shitty. However, I've been thinking about it and, long term wise, leaving my side income 95% percent coming from one basket (Patreon), I've been trying to look at alternatives. Of course, the idea isn't to go "Hey guys! Please support me on EVERY service I'm on!" That'd be really dumb. Instead, I'm thinking of maybe having an alternative to Patreon that'd be run exactly the same as the Patreon. Meaning that regardless of which service you're using, it'll be exactly the same content across the board, along with blog posts and what have you. Kinda like how I keep deviant art/pixiv/tumblr mostly in sync.

The way I see it, that'll give people the option to pick and choose the service they'd rather use to support me vs. being forced to pick only one service that you might not want to give your money to for personal reasons. I know that Kickstarter is gonna do a wide launch of their Patreon like service soon (https://d.rip/), and I'm watching that to see how they'll go about it.

Anyway, what're your thoughts? Am I worrying too much about it? Let me know down in the comments.

I agree with Lyra and Himesama. This feels like an effort by Patreon to do away with the $1 tier and possibly the $3 tier. From my retail days I can say that a $1 credit card charge is a loss for the retailer. I have no idea how Patreon is internally structured on how they handle the charges but a fee for every single Patreon you support feels like a greed move since Supporters are only charged for the total.

I already let you know my feelings on this but putting it out for the public: As someone who supports multiple patreons at low tier rewards, this sucks. A lot. Considering my income is stretched pretty thin what with a car and rent and loans, increasing my donations from roughly $60 a month to $75+ is a massive pain in the ass. 15 bucks doesn't sound like a lot to plenty of people I'm sure, but for me, $15 is enough to pay for a week's worth of lunches.

Himesama

That is exactly the same plan I have in mind for my own Patreon work.

On the fence as of now. I like supporting creators, but not liking the whole fees thing. I support like 5 people and 2 or 3 of my pledges are 1 dollar ones, not great.

Discord

What really peeved me was that you gotta pay the fee for every patreon you support. It effectively hurts people who wanna support a lot a different artists with a tiny bit of money. I really hope patreon goes back and reworked it, or Kickstarter takes note and goes "we're not doing that."

As a $1 supporter the fee definitely caused me to seriously consider backing out. At the end of the day it's not that big of a deal but I feel like this fee is going to hurt people who are largely supported by smaller payments so that they will end up with much less people opting in than they otherwise would. So there's nothing really wrong with seeking out alternatives I think even if you leave this up as an option.

Geeze.. what's gonna happen?
