Watched some more English dubbed Aria tonight. I think I figured out part of my issue with Veronica Taylor as Akari. Not to say she's bad at it. Far from it. I like her a lot as a voice actress. The issue is more with Akari the character than anything.

Veronica Taylor's Akari sounds like an elementary school teacher talking to her students. Similar to how my sister talks, as she's an elementary school teacher, and sometimes it leaks out into every day conversation. Akari is a free spirited character with some of the sappiest lines written for her.

When it's in Japanese (and can't understand the language), there's a degree of separation, where you can read the sappy lines and go "Ah, yes. I see." But the moment it's spoken in English you go "Wait, what? That's so fucking corny." I don't think Taylor could've done much better with the material she had.

Still can't hear James Carter Cathcart without thinking of him saying "Don't stop sucking, or else I'll buy you flowers and take you dancing!" in the English dub adaptation of the hentai Hyakki. I don't care I've heard him longer as Gary Oak from Pokemon. Lines like that become permanently ingrained into your brain.
