The other day I saw the trailer for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
I don't know, man.
Like, I enjoyed those old View Askewniverse films back when I was like 14/15. Probably because they're pretty juvenile films. And honestly to this day I consider Clerks to be one of my favorite films of all time and what got me interested in writing dialogue. When I've gone back and rewatched the first Jay and Silent Bob film (and Mallrats), it feels like watching a live action Saturday morning cartoon. They're dumb and silly. But the protagonists are mostly in their 20s, a time when doing stupid ass shit is acceptable.
But now? When Kevin Smith is about to reach his 50s? Plus redoing the same gags from before? Yeah, I get it. "It's a movie about reboots." But it's that same problem that Goldmember had way back when: reusing the same jokes and then going "Look! It's the exact same joke!" as if that's the gag doesn't work for me. I haven't seen a Kevin Smith film past Zack and Miri Make A Porno (it sucked), so I don't know the quality of those films, but maybe, just maybe, Kevin Smith isn't that good? Cue me remembering this other bit from a thing I like when I was 15.
I'll probably go see it anyway just to see if he sends the characters off. And listen to Jungle Love again, because it'll probably be in the film again.
