I went and picked up Super Mario Maker 2 over the weekend. Walmart has them for $49.99 in store, and knowing that rarely Nintendo games go below $45 unless they're those greatest hit games (or the game sold super poorly), I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger.
As a fan of the original Mario Maker, I really like all the new stuff they added. Gives a lot more variety and allows for some really cool shit the first game couldn't pull off. Honestly, slopes are great. Endless mode is a lot more fun than the 100 Mario challenge, which booted you to a unskippable credits sequence after like 15 levels or so. Being able to just keep jumping to new levels is great!
Making levels is a pretty big downgrade, however. First off, having the Wii U game pad made shit a hell of a lot easier to go between looking at the screen and then playing on TV. Not only that, but the layout of block choices was designed knowing you had full access to the touch pad all the time. The new version instead changed shit up assuming you'll default to making levels with a controller, which really bites. It takes more effort to grab which specific block you want, swapping through different menus compared to Mario Maker's drop down list showing pretty much every available block at one time. Because of that I wound up deciding I'm probably gonna stick with only playing other people's levels. Besides, they're a hell of a lot more creative than I am.
In other news, I'm gonna be at Anime Fest on Friday fucking around the dealer's room and trying to get an autograph from Yoshitoshi Abe. Not sure if I wanna get my Lain bluray boxset, lain art book, or one of my Haibane Renmei DVD caves signed. Leaning on the art book.
