I saw the Sonic the Hedgehog movie on Thursday night and enjoyed it more than Detective Pikachu. Solid B+.
As a kid in the 90s who liked Sonic along with Jim Carrey, the movie was a lot of fun. It never takes itself that seriously, which helps with some of the plot contrivances that are spread throughout the film. You're never meant to think too much in the plot, but sit back and enjoy it for what it is: a silly children's film. Its story is also pretty straight forward, which is what I liked about it more than Detective Pikachu. With Pikachu, once they get to the lab and everything thereafter it loses me. Moreso with the ridiculous plan with the villain, trying to fuse pokemon and people together as a means of "pushing humanity through the next step of evolution." It's too stupid. Sonic, meanwhile, is Dr. Robotnik trying to capture Sonic for the US government. Sure, it's simple, but it doesn't need to be anything else.
Well, the beginning scene has some implications and is kinda serious, but that went away pretty quickly.
Jim Carrey goes full on early 90s Jim Carrey. He's a fucking goofball and has fun with the character. It was great seeing him back in top form. Seemed like he was having a blast working on it. Curious as to how much was adlibbed.
Anyway, Sonic was fun. Worth checking out.
