Oh so awkward adult world

So, I’ve got the first Steam review rejected and decided to share the burning itch down my back from some of their "points".

All adult games in Steam must pass through a special adult content check where devs need to mark all kinds of sex in the game.

Quote: “You must disclose all the adult content you've uploaded in your game builds, even if it's not accessible or presented in your game.

Well, makes sense. After checking all the described options, players could either check if their favorite kinks are in the game or find something that puts them off. It’s best to be upfront with this. *30 minutes later* Alright, I described them all – time to hit the review.

Quote: “Your review has failed because the description of the mature content in your app is overly explicit.

Ugh… But you asked me to be as detailed as possible… How can I describe a deepthroat without being too direct? Err… Swallowing non-medical hoses? What about anal? Ramming the back door? Guess cumshots or bukkake will become expired sour cream explosions, right? You know, I would definitely check out a game with such a description just to see what the hell is going on there.

The next step – screenshots. For some reason, Steam recommends uploading at least 4 pictures suited for all ages, even for an adult game. You can’t even open an adult game’s store page without allowing adult content first but whatever. It’s easy, I’ll just use the screenshots from Patreon’s main post. Right?

Wrong. None of these are good enough because, quote: “Your store page has failed our review because one or more screenshots are marked as "Suitable for all ages", although they have suggestive themes.

Ok. Oka~ay. Maybe, just maybe, I can somewhat agree in Night Gaunt’s case, but everything else… I’m fervently waiting for the point where child protection will reach the peak of absurdity. Did your kid visit a beach? Well, I hope you glued up a bucket on their head because suggestive themes were pretty much everywhere. Did they see an Oskar ceremony? Oh noes, some of these dresses were pretty open so no more TV.

And the cherry on top, quote: “Your build has failed our review because it contains a call to action to donate through a non-Steam website. After launching the game, a Dev Blog button is on the main menu, and it leads to Patreon link.

Ugh… So? How is this a “call to action to donate”? All news, polls and FAQs are here along with walkthroughs. I‘ve never asked to donate, even in pretty tough situations because I respect my community. Whatever – can I change the link from overview to the FAQ section? Nope, Patreon is bad, remove it.

Well, what can I say?

If you think Nutaku is bad, Steam is 1000% worse. If you go check the majority of NSFW games that are on Steam, those that SOMEHOW, miracly manage to pass by, you'll notice that all of them are censored, with some of them featuring offsite patch (very very rarely +18 DLC available). Also, Steam doesn't accept publishes to feature offsite patches, so usually what the developers do is, feature an offsite patch, but, since they can't promote it, they use a player reviewer to review the game and feature the link to the offsite patch in the review, OR someone post the patch up in the community section (devs also can't share the patch on the community, it must be a player). This all, assuming you manage to pass the inicial approval, bypass all the censorship and nitpicking, and manage to get the game going, all the while hoping you do not get the game banned after 1 weeks, 2 weeks or even months after release. Even all ages adapted visual novels constantly get banned in the platform, just because they feature high school sceneries, and keep in mind i'm talking all ages visual novels, without any sex at all. No patches or similar whatsoever. https://www.oneangrygamer.net/steam-waifu-holocaust-2-0-banned-game-list/ This is just a small list of what I'm talking about. There are plenty of others that pass under the carpet and never get noticed to get into the list. Aside from Nutaku, itch.io MIGHT be an alternative, but I'm not informed about that platform.

Well, since Nutaku requires me to change 1/3rd of the scenes, Steam is the only alternative from big distribution platforms.

I don't have a problem with removing the Patreon link from the game since I made the "features" logic to explain special controls inside the main menu. I have a problem with their reasoning, but it's their store.

Yeehaw Games

I suppose you could redirect them to an external site and use that site to link to here? That way the link in the game wouldn't "redirect to a call to donate"

Good luck getting Steam to approve your game. Steam adult game approval depends on who is approving it. If you get some SJW, it won't get approved, ever. And even IF it gets approved, most likely will be banned after a week or two. My advice: check the constant adult games that are getting banned DAILY on Steam. You'll see a patern, and you will realize that might as well forget Steam and move to another platform.
